  • Peaceful park with heated microlodges set around a woodland pond
  • Wildlife haven five minutes' drive from Ellesmere's lake
  • Picnic bench, fridge, electricity and lockable doors for each lodge
Remember when you were teeny and used to dream of finding a snug hideaway in the woods… where no-one could find you and your fellow bandits? Might the urge to escape with a select band of outlaws still surge up you occasionally? Yes? Then family-friendly Nantclimbers Woodland Camping Huts in Shropshire is a stonking site for your hideaway needs: tiny, peaceful and made up of snug camping microlodges set around a woodland pond… you'll be as free as a bird. Speaking of birds, there are loads of them – and accompanying beasts – to spot in the adjoining woodland: sit around the campfire to listen to owls hooting at night, or keep your eyes peeled for badgers, polecats, squirrels and foxes. You might also see a kestrel or buzzard or two, but do remember to look up… The spankingly clean and well-maintained microlodges at Nantclimbers all come with bunk beds, table, bench, electricity, fridge and lockable doors: bring your own bedding to snuggle down in. Guests are welcome to cart along their own cooking equipment, and campfires are allowed at designated times in the firepits; barbecues are also welcome as long as they’re kept off the ground. Each microlodge comes with its own picnic bench overlooking the water and car parking is a short stroll away. Amenities are kept to the highest standards so that no stress spoils your hideaway: the toilet and shower block has lashings of hot water, with a washing up area added too. There's a real tucked-away adventure to be had here, so the track to the huts is best suited to 4x4s (other vehicles may be taken along the track at the owners' own risk).

Local attractions

Let the kids loose in the woods for nature spotting and general frolicking: there are swathes of walks in the surrounding area. The market town of Ellesmere five minutes’ drive away is famed for its 118-acre mere; drop into the visitors’ centre and have a wander to spot herons and other mere locals. Steam boat trips, rowing boat hire and fishing are all available too. Also in town, try the sculpture trail, teeing off at The Brow Golf Club or some all-important retail therapy, including the summer food festival bursting with local produce. The splendid medieval town of Shrewsbury, the birthplace of Charles Darwin is about 35 minutes' drive from Nantclimbers: options here include taking a boat or canoe trip along the River Severn which runs through the town, or visiting the many historical attractions… there are over 600 listed buildings. Chester and its zoo is also within 35 minutes. The closest beaches of the north Wales coastline, Rhyl and Prestatyn, are just over an hour away.

Liked: Very nice and peaceful place. Loved it and would definitely go again.

Disliked: If you have a low car then double think about going in the winter as the road is a little muddy, summer will be all good.

Stoat 1 bedroom microlodge (four person)

Liked: The site looks very pretty, and the cabin was lovely. It could be warmed up with heating as and when required. We also found the beds perfectly comfortable too. There was a good size table with benches to fit 4 people. The toilet/shower block was clean and modern with ample hot water too. Everywhere was immaculately clean on arrival and cleaned promptly at change overs.

Disliked: The entire site was extremely boggy, muddy and wet despite a generous covering of bark throughout. Also, the single sink to wash up at is not enough for the site if full, and was also pitch black due to the only light by it not working. There are only benches to sit on so not as comfy as could be. We took camping chairs as an alternative. The track down to the site is most definitely better suited to 4x4 vehicles which is clearly stated online and when booking. No wifi or any signal full stop! This is a dark, isolated site which I’m sure is far nicer in summer months. Nothing to occupy children except roaming the woods (which have a warning sign on the track for shotguns in use!)
