  • Luxury glamping within the Peak District National Park, Staffordshire
  • Alton Towers half an hour’s drive, and Chatsworth House 45 minutes
  • Private gardens, shared firepit; hikes from site; pub 20 minutes’ walk
It’s safe to say that Hen Cloud Cottages have a pretty spectacular setting in the Peak District National Park, surrounded by moorland and with numerous footpaths leading directly from the accommodation – which is pretty spectacular too – to The Roaches, a craggy rocky outcrop and famed local landmark. The site owners are happy to advise on where to walk, run or cycle, as well as helping you to book guided e-bike tours or climbing lessons in the minuscule hamlet of Upper Hulme (five minutes’ drive). When you’re back at base after a day of sporty action or sightseeing, there’s a firepit provided near the pond for barbecues (stock up on goodies at shops in Leek, 15 minutes), or otherwise you can potter down to the local pub (20 minutes’ walk) for some pub classics and local beers. And what of the accommodation? Natty units are comfortably and stylishly furnished, all with private outside spaces so you really appreciate those Peak District views as you dine alfresco on warm days. Owing to the fact that sheep graze freely in the national park, dogs are not allowed at this site.

Ramshaw View 2 bedroom static caravan

Liked: Peaceful and scenic area

Disliked: Boiler did not work, followed all the instructions available. Only one Heater in the caravan worked. No response back from the number I was told to use thru the booking site. Left after the first night as it was far too damp and cold without heating and hot water for our daughter.

Laburnum 1 bedroom shepherd's hut (adults only, hot tub)

Liked: Rural area quiet and peaceful.

Disliked: Code should be sent via text message to prevent an abrupt conversation with owner. Mould in hot tub, we excitedly got in only to realise the horror of the black mold and deemed it too dangerous to enter. Damp kitchen cupboards horrendous damp smell. Had to clean all cups / plates before use as they were damp, and had a musty smell to them. Fire hazard with over stacked plugs near telly for very noisy heater. Departure details seem silly - strip the bed, empty the bin etc then threatened with getting money back through agent if damages occurred or hot tub not correctly put back - I felt I needed to take images to prove I had done all the above as there was an underlying feeling that this is normal practice for them (especially after an abrupt conversation with the opener on check in) Wasn’t the best when you’re stripping the bed to reveal stains on the duvet - isn’t a nice feeling to do the job of the host on preparation for the next people - even my son said ‘why are you doing that mummy, is the woman lazy’ Poor finish with chips to sink, handles on bed falling off exposing sharp screws. Unable to use the oven as wouldn’t turn on, but saved me having to clean the tray before use! Parking space was tight, and wouldn’t class it to be by the cabin an pitch up states it’s a short walk away. Water didn’t get hot enough to a standard to wash the pots, had to use a kettle but sign to say ‘don’t be wasteful with water’

Lavender 1 bedroom shepherd's hut (adults only, hot tub)

Liked: Couldn’t say as we were not given details to get in to the property and couldn’t contact anyone as pitch up put wrong contact details on their booking confirmation.

Disliked: Yes there were mistakes 1. Hen cloud never sent arrival details to enter the property, which they accepted but couldn’t contact anyone so had to go home. 2. Pitch had put wrong mobile no. On booking confirmation so couldn’t get hold of anyone. Yes I did get a refund, but yet again the customer always looses out because the 3rd parties don’t want to take responsibility and occur the extra cost for mistakes made. Fundamentally I would have expected hen cloud to have reimbursed us with a free night for fuel costs and inconvenience. They said they were out of pocket. Bet that’s painful when there is a Range Rover sat on the drive. They now ignore my emails. Obviously don’t like to look after their customers.

Lavender 1 bedroom shepherd's hut (adults only, hot tub)

Liked: The Lavender shepherd's hut is in a fantastic location and it is very nice accommodation apart from the hot tub.

Disliked: The hot tub wasn't hot, 27 degrees when we came to use it and no chance of it warming up enough in the time we had available. The hot tub was a major factor in our decision to select this accommodation so we were really disappointed. There was no response to the polite email I sent asking if there might be some compensation of either a partial refund or a discount for a future stay, so we won't be going back.

Lavender 1 bedroom shepherd's hut (adults only, hot tub)

Liked: Absolutely stunning place, great views of the Peak District. We was actually rather gutted we had planned so much because we would of loved more time at our shepherds hut. Location was easy to find and you gather the little quirks of the hut if you read the information on the walls. Gorgeous scenery, couldn’t of picked a better place for us.

Disliked: The chemicals in the hot tub when we first got in was a little strong, when the bubbles went on it stung our eyes a little, but the next time we used it it wasn’t so bad. We couldn’t get the tv to work but we also didn’t ask for help so was our fault. No wifi.. which actually I quite liked in the end but made it a little difficult to plan routes etc.

From the manager: Hi there, Thank you for your review, sorry you feel this way No wifi is listed we are in a remote location we do not offer wifi. The tv does work - it has a digital box to get the tv working and enable channels Not once did anyone contact to say about any of the above - you also had my number (Kat) as I messaged you with arrival details. I would have assisted with any of the above. There is one space per accommodation as listed. Unfortunately we are not always on site but there are contact numbers on business cards in the caravan.

Laburnum 1 bedroom shepherd's hut (adults only, hot tub)

Liked: Location. Quiet. Comfy. Hot tub.

Disliked: Time limit on hot tub. I would love to return but watching the clock to make sure we were out of the tub by 10pm spoilt things a little. We didnt get much time in there as we didnt arrive til late. Maybe change the time limit to 11pm. No wifi either.
