  • Peaceful site with three wild swimming lakes
  • A 15-minute drive to central York, and 30 minutes to Castle Howard
  • Secluded pitches near the site's lakes; dark skies area
Pool Bridge Farm is home to a large six-acre grass site lined with ancient oak trees. Even though you’re in the middle of the countryside, it is only a 15-minute drive from historic York and all its museums, restaurants and riverside walks. There are three lakes for wild (open-water) swimming, which is free for all guests from arrival to departure. Lakeside saunas (open from Thursday to Sunday and on bank holidays) must be booked separately. Make your way to the on-site café (open from Thursday to Sunday, as well as bank holidays). As the site is a mini nature reserve dedicated to preserving local wildlife, guests also have the chance to spot barn owls and kestrels feeding next to the site. Thanks to the lack of light pollution, the site is in a dark-skies area. You can be pottering around Rievaulx Abbey or living it up among the bright lights of York, but on a sunny evening, do try to get back to base at nightfall to indulge in a spot of stargazing while cosied up around your firepit. Modern amenities include a well-maintained toilet and shower block a few minutes' walk from the pitches via a path along the bank of one of the swimming lakes, so take in the scenery as you stroll to the facilities (best bring a torch too).

Meadow non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Glorious setting, tranquil a and beautiful with lovely woodland walks, with fabulous swimming changing families and a wood fired sauna, good toilet facilities and cafe on site. With the new lighting around the lake and the fire pits the full moon wim was just magical and had a wonderful time. Couldn’t use the camping field as too boggy.

Disliked: Having to use the car park was a dissapointment as very busy but far better than getting stuck in a field, so asked to park very close to other campers , due to being a very busy full moon swim. Said we could move out when swimmers had gone but all too tired to do that. Also sadly now no dogs are allowed on site , which means I can’t come back as can’t leave my elderly lurcher and I was hoping to have many more stay over swims with my friends.

Liked: Loved PoolBridge. The lakes were fabulous either for swimming or sitting round. Very pretty full of wildlife. Cafe on site which was great.

Disliked: A good walk to the toilets and shower from the camping ground. I think this is being sorted over the winter. But other than that it was great

Meadow non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: very tranquil location, no electric hook up so back to basics. nature walk around the whole site. fire pits and picnic benches appreciated. swimming lakes are wonderful. limited phone signal / no wifi contributed to relaxation.

Disliked: toilets and showers are limited and muddy as mainly a resource for swimmers. not enough hot water for washing up. not sure if any staff on site after swimming lakes closed.

Liked: My favourite campsite. Beautiful scenery, wildlife, lakes for swimming. Would hate for it to get 'over commercialised' - it's perfect just as it is.

Local attractions

You can cycle into York (30 minutes by bike) along a bridleway accessed from the farm – there’s also a regular bus service passing the farm entrance. Stroll around Roman walls, tour the Gothic Minster and check out the locomotives in National Railway Museum York. Have a flutter at York Racecourse (both 15 minutes’ drive) and spend all your winnings in the designer boutiques at Designer Outlet York (10 minutes). Alternatively, head off into the North York Moors National Park (50 minutes) for biking and walking over glorious moorland – to add an architectural element to your rambles, wander around the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey (50 minutes) or explore follies and temples in the landscaped grounds at Castle Howard (30 minutes). If you’ve got kids on board, Jorvik Viking Centre is a top spot for its immersive tour around a replica Viking village (complete with smells), or you can book tasting sessions at York’s Chocolate Story (both 15 minutes). Older kids might love ghost tours of night-time streets, but younger children should probably stick to the cute goats and mini-train rides at Piglets Adventure Farm (20 minutes).
