Local attractions

High-level adventure for climbing holidays or hiking holidays, and family-friendly walking holidays await you and bustling Keswick is only seven miles away. In terms of walking destinations, there is no better place for climbing Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Bowfell. However, size isn't everything and the more lowly Castle Crag will leave you with an enduring memory of the beauty and atmosphere of the Lake District. Catbells, Walla Crag and walks along the River Derwent are cherished family favourites. Cycling around Derwentwater is a great day in the saddle. Admire the ever changing and breathtaking views across Derwentwater and stop off at cafés at Grange and Keswick to keep you going. If you are more of a mountain biker, the 19 kilometre red grade Altura trail has two loops which includes 15 kilometres of challenging single track sections and popular features like berms, jumps, rock features, skinnies, cork screws and table tops. Optional black grade features fantastic views of Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite, Helvellyn and Skiddaw as the trail takes the rider to an altitude of 500m (1600ft) above Keswick. Shepherd's crag is a unique climbing ground! The buttresses provide good pitches for both beginner and tiger. The rock is generally excellent. Classic routes abound in Borrowdale and include Little Chamonix, Troutdale Pinnacle, Corvus and many others. Spend an afternoon solving tricky bouldering problems on the Bowderstone. There's excellent winter climbing on Great End. Alternatively, if you want to get out on the water, fast and furious dragon boat racing is a must for groups and for something totally different, don't miss the experience of sailing or rowing a Viking Longboat.
