  • Smart, well-equipped yurts on a family-run Lake District farm
  • A 10-minute drive from Derwentwater and 20 from Keswick
  • Next to the Derwent river, with fab views of Borrowdale
If you’re organising an outdoorsy Cumbria break with a little luxury sprinkled into the mix, a splendid spot to select is Inside Out Camping Yurts at Seatoller – this glamping site is in a quiet corner of a family-run farm in the Lake District National Park, 20 minutes’ drive from Keswick. Walking straight out to some of the area’s highest hills, including both Scafell Pike and Great Gable, is possible from this site set 20 minutes’ drive from Keswick. Watersports, boat trips and climbing outings are all a cinch to sort too, and it’s a five-minute drive to the Honister Mine for underground tours and climbing sessions on via ferrata trails. Stunning scenery isn’t just for folk who head out hiking, however: those who’d rather settle in on site can still gaze out over the Borrowdale valley or take a gentle wander by the Derwent River, which runs past the grounds. The woodland next to the farm brims with wildlife, so you might also spot owls, woodpeckers and other passing birds while sticking around here. Retreat indoors to your five-metre yurt once you’ve had enough time in the open air – each one is kitted out with a woodburning stove, solar lights, futon beds, a well-equipped kitchen with a gas cooker and an outdoor area with a barbecue and seating. The essential facilities have also had a bit of thought put into them. There’s a cold water tap close to the yurts, toilets are a couple of minutes’ walk away, and free showers with plenty of hot water are a five-minute walk away in a converted barn.

Yurt

Liked: Loved the location by the river and within walking distance to the start of the scafell pike walk. Unbelievable to be in temperate rainforest in England! The yurt was very well provisioned with everything we needed and lots of spare logs for the chilly October nights.

Disliked: Nothing, it was more than we could expect. It was spot on.

Yurt

Liked: Everything. Firstly, don't believe the complaints about the toilets being miles away, they aren't, nor are the showers. The yurt style tent was huge and better equipped than any I've ever stayed in. The odd people who complain must never have camped in their lives. The beds were spotless and sooo cosy we couldn't get up in a morning. The farm and people there are lovely and they make awesome pizzas. The location is great for so many walks and activities. The bus stop is outside the campsite and it's £2 to Keswick. Would definitely recommend and would happily come and just camp riverside next time.

Disliked: Nothing

Yurt

Liked: Lovely, well kept Yurt and overall campsite (including toilets and showers). Very surprised we actually managed to get the dates at such last minute. Received instructions email and text message from Simon before arrival, which was super handy and easy to follow. Always reassuring to hear directly from the campsite owner beforehand, and received a personal thank you message after our stay. Instructions manual in the Yurt was easy to follow and handy, and it was a nice touch to already have some wood to burn when we arrived late Friday evening - thanks! The location was superb and so were the pizzas. I will be returning, hopefully before the end of 2022 :)

Disliked: Not really a dislike but there was a group of young (ish) people who stayed over the Friday night and they were loud into the early hours. I think they might have been the DOE? No music, just the occasional scream/loud laughing. It wasn't an issue for me and my friend, but I can imagine some people would find it annoying.

Yurt

Liked: Yurt facilities were good, everything that was needed for cooking and staying warm, and no worries in windy and rainy weather. Enjoyed being near the stream and well positioned for good hiking.

Disliked: The campsite has only two toilets per sex, and the separate showers (whilst free and hot) are a walk up the main road. The yurts appear isolated at one end of the site, but are in fact on a thoroughfare for walking to the showers. No welcome instructions were received, although other yurters clearly received some by email. The campsite is commonly used by DoE groups, who are generally lovely, but can rather dominate the facilities. It felt like a classic campsite experience but with a pleasant yurt - not super surprising there was late availability.

Local attractions

It’s not a Lakeland break without bobbing along on a boat somewhere, so dawdle over to Derwentwater to hire a vessel (10 minutes’ drive) for a spot of sailing. You also can’t come to Cumbria without embarking on a walk or two, so navigate your way on routes up the popular Catbells (15 minutes) or take on a serious challenge by scaling Helvellyn (half an hour), the third-highest peak in the Lake District National Park. This is also a sought-after spot for mountain biking if you have a need for speed. Gentler jaunts are to be had around Rydal Hall Gardens (40 minutes), the Castlerigg stone circle (25 minutes) and among the animals at the Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour). Don’t skip Keswick (20 minutes) either – this cute town has a pencil museum, brewery, swimming pool and theatre, so it’s a smashing spot to visit when the weather’s not quite good enough for wandering around outdoors.
