  • Spacious green site two minutes' drive or 25 mins' walk from Ullswater
  • Riverside setting: kayak to Ullswater straight from the site
  • Toilets, showers and kitchen; local village two minutes' walk away
Potter along to Patterdale for hikes in Cumbrian countryside, with easy access to world-famed Lake District attractions: Ullswater and the pier for Ullswater Steamers are only a couple of minutes’ drive from here. YHA Patterdale is in tiptop setting too for those arriving under their own steam, as Ullswater is about 25 minutes away by foot – or 10 by bike – and it’s very much worth pointing out that you can arrive there by kayak straight from the site… A bus stop is outside the grounds for rides on to Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick (between 55 minutes to an hour and a quarter by bus; if you do want to drive, all three are within 20 to 30 minutes). The site’s also well placed for local amenities with local village Patterdale a couple of minutes’ walk away, and for hikes, as the village is the starting point for hill walks such as the Striding Edge path up to Helvellyn. Views? Also sorted: the hostel is on the bend of a river with viewsome scenes towards Hartsop Dodd and Place Fell, and the camping field has views south towards Kirkstone Pass. Pitches are on grass, in a spacious setting next to the main car park. Guests have access to all hostel facilities including toilets, showers and a self-catering kitchen.

Local attractions

These lands are made for walking – and watersports, and cruising around in boats... Start off on dry land with the many hikes available from the local village: Patterdale’s Westmorland and Ullswater valley setting is regarded as one of the best for hiking in all the Lakes. As well as the Striding Edge walk, fells within hiking distance include High Street, Place Fell, Fairfield and Red Screes, with Stony Cove Pike further afield at the end of the valley towards Ambleside. Around Ullswater, clamber up the fells of Gowbarrow and Hallin, or pack a hefty picnic and set off on the 20-mile Ullswater Way passing Pooley Bridge, Aria Force, Glenridding and Howtown. (Do proudly pick up a pin badge celebrating your achievement for full boasting purposes back home; bag one at the Glenridding Tourist Information Centre, Ullswater Steamers Pier House and a few other businesses along the way.) And next… watery options around these watery lands. Start with a steamer trip on Ullswater (obvs), then have a day at Glenridding’s sailing centre a mile and a half from the hostel. You should also venture for a day trip at Windermere (25 minutes’ drive or 55 minutes by bus), for steamer rides, ferry rides, boating clubs (five), a sailing club and a rowing club... after all that, puff along to the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway for a summer steam train ride.
