  • Well-equipped eco glampsite in 40 acres of woodland near Newton Abbot
  • Woodland walks, fort, assault course, zipwire, pond and yoga
  • Campfires encouraged: firepit and outdoor seating at each yurt
Devon and Dartmoor and wildlife watching and campfires... this site is simply spectacular. Based just outside the village of Liverton four miles from Newton Abbot, Yurtcamp is an eco-friendly, woodland and glamping site you'll want to camp out at for quite some time – it's nicely secluded as well, so less chance of the boss finding you... All accommodation is in yurts, on a 40-acre forested site with easy access to fab woodland walks from the grounds – and a woodland zipwire for the hardy. Yurts are fully kitted out for sleeping, cooking or just general idling, and all have access to an outdoor firepit for campfires and barbecues: campfires are positively encouraged here, so source some suitable recipes before arrival and come prepped to wield your outdoor cooking kit. Yurtcamp is a sustainable site with minimum use of non-renewable energy. It's well set up for nature too, as its ancient woodland setting is a designated county wildlife site, and David and the team run a woodland management programme to attract and monitor local species. You and the kids can roam around the surrounding woodland: look out for the fort and the assault course; see what species you can spy around the pond, or settle down after a hike for eats and drinks at the handsome (separately operated) fully licensed Woodland Café. Grownups also have the option of classes in pottery, yoga, fitness and other assorted activities; ask on site when you arrive. A modern and well-maintained amenities block is a short walk from the yurts, with separate male, female and disabled facilities including toilets, hot showers, hairdryers and mirrors. Most of the site and several of the yurts are wheelchair accessible.

Route directions

Please use these directions as satnav does not cope with the last two miles. Take the M5 southbound to the end of the motorway. The road continues as the A38 in the direction of Plymouth. Approximately 12 miles along the A38 is the Drumbridges exit signed to Newton Abbot, Bovey Tracy, Stover and Liverton. At the roundabout take the third exit (signposted Liverton). Go straight on for approximately one mile and you will go over a large bridge. Immediately after crossing the bridge take the left turn into Staplehill Road and 150 metres down on the right is YurtCamp. Pull into the drive and the car park is straight ahead. Please park with the front or rear of your car at right angles to the fence. Please park as economically as you reasonably can. You will see signs to the reception building where you can check in.

Local attractions

You really could laze and ramble around the site for your entire stay, but it's easy to get out and about from here too. Wild swimming, hiking, rock climbing, horse riding and mountain biking are top picks on Dartmoor; English Heritage and National Trust properties are scattered all over the county, and there's good access to city lights, with Exeter 20 minutes' drive away and Plymouth 45. As it's Devon, beach days should be had too: take your togs and your bucket and spade to Teignmouth (20 minutes) and its free water play park, or drive a bit further to spectacular Dawlish Warren (35 minutes) for an award-winning beach and famed nature reserve. Other options (hint: there are many) include Pennywell Farm, Becky Falls waterfalls, Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts at Torquay, all within 15 to 30 minutes. And as it's Devon, local cuisine should be tucked into... munch your way around the farmers' market at Bovey Tracey and the specialist food shops of Ashburton, both within 10 minutes.
