  • Lake- and sea-view site set around an old country mill with a stream
  • A five-minute drive from Dunfanaghy; just off the N56 for easy access
  • Organic garden, meditation areas, meals on site, wifi, shared kitchen
Deliberating over from where to dawdle when in County Donegal? As the luck of the Irish would have it, this site sitting around a small country hostel in an old mill with a stream is fully set up as a topnotch base for trips in the country’s north west. It’s been recommended by many a big hitter in the travel world – from Lonely Planet to the Rough Guides – for ace amenities like an organic garden, meditation areas and its sunsets. And all this before you even take note of Corcreggan Mill's fab views over New Lake and the Atlantic Ocean towards Tory Island… Feasting with your eyes got you thinking of filling the belly? The site has homecooked food available, with breakfasts, tasty fish and chips and weekend tapas served up in the on-site wine bar. A cosy shared lounge, kitchen and dining area are also in the mill, so you can natter with other travellers while noshing or cooking. Restaurants are also in the seaside settlement of Dunfanaghy a five-minute drive away (or 40-minute walk if you’re planning on indulging in a couple of pints of Guinness at one of the music-filled pubs), with grocery shops, artisan delis and craft boutiques to browse as well. This village is also where to wander for surf schools, golf links and pony trekking courses, plus it has three new coastal loop walks to set off on (drop by the visitor centre for top tips on where to toddle). You can also stroll from the site along a public footpath to uninhabited Tramore beach west of New Lake, stopping off at an old underground souterrain enroute...

Local attractions

Other beaches to bounce around in this area include Killahoey, a 10-minute drive and popular for horse riding along the sandy shore, and Marble Hill (15 minutes) with its bobbing boats in the summertime. Six others are accessible by foot or car too – have a natter with Corcreggan Mill’s knowledgable owners for the down low. For epic views over soaring sea cliffs, walks around the Horn Head peninsula start from 15 minutes away by car and inland wanders of the wooded variety can be had on the nature trails at Ards Forest Park or around the 15th-century Doe Castle, both under 20 minutes’ drive. You can also dive deeper into the countryside at Glenveagh National Park (30 minutes south east), the second biggest protected area of its type in Ireland with mountains, lakes and waterfalls to roam between.
