  • Family-friendly site at a working croft on a tiny car-free island
  • Firepit and barbecue area
  • Five minutes' walk from the beach and several more within easy reach
Cars driving you nuts? Want an old-style camping trip on a pretty and peaceful island? Retreat to the tiny island of Iona in the Inner Hebrides – this is an ancient isle full of history where kings were laid to rest and monks wandered in scholarly contemplation, and which is still known today as a place of peace. Cars are allowed for resident islanders only (if you’re driving, you can leave your car at the ferry port in Fionnphort), but it’s easy to get about under your own steam as the island is only three and a half miles long. From the ferry, it’s a 20-minute walk to Isle of Iona Campsite on the west of the island, a working croft with first-rate views, roomy grass tent pitches and good facilities alongside its back-to-basics natural vibe: there are five toilets and five showers (in a smart washroom block opened for the 2021 season) plus a firepit and barbecue area. Foodwise, a Spar is on the island for picking up groceries, tipples and other essentials, with two hotels, a pub and a tearoom serving up meals and snacks.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The field/site is beautifully maintained. Met the farmer while he was mowing. He was very friendly and helpful, offered to keep our bags after checkout if we were taking a later ferry and didn't want all our gear on our backs. The shower/toilet block was great and clean, with 4 or 5 showers to accommodate many campers. There is a short walk to a beautiful western beach (nearer) or about 25-30min walk back into the main shops area of Iona, and only about 10 more mins to the north beach. The shared kitchen and wash up area was well kept too.

Disliked: The midgies came out in the evening and morning. That wasn't enjoyable, but not really the farmer's fault is it?

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Remotenesses of campsite but with excellent facilities. Owners helpful and relaxed about checking in and out, made space available for the packed tent after checkout so we could roam the island without taking it with us

Disliked: No Wi-Fi, for young children it’s a 20minute walk from the ferry

Liked: The beautiful location of this campsite, close to the ferry and near to the most stunning white sand beach. Good facilities with toilets and showers, and a kitchen area. Flat tent sites and plenty of space to spread out. Picnic tables. Could watch the sunset from the hill.

Local attractions

Take to your toes or hire a bike for a trip around Iona to see its well-known sights: Dun I, the highest point on Iona; Iona Abbey, founded by St Columba in the sixth century and used as a monastery until the Reformation; the medieval nunnery; stone Celtic crosses, and the burial monuments of kings including Mac Beth. The heritage centre on the island is open from between the end of March and end of October for info on Iona history. Iona has several gorgeous beaches on the island for sunbathing, rockpooling and spotting local otters and seabirds: the sheltered cove of Port Bàn; the North End beaches with their dunes and views across to Mull and Staffa, and St Columba’s Bay, where Columba is said to have landed from Ireland (and which is also known for its glittering green stones ‘Mermaid’s Tears’). Or tee off with a difference at Iona’s golf club, which has beachside views and a bull wandering around the vegetation of the ninth hole. Island hopping? Boat trips to other local islands such as Staffa and Lunga can be booked back at Fionnphort, or make for Mull for the day to sample single malt whisky from Tobermory, catch a glimpse of a white-tailed or golden eagle, or explore part of its 300 miles of coast. Catch a ferry from Craignore port on Mull to Oban, home to another distillery and with ferry access to Coll, Tiree, Lismore, Barra and South Uist.
