  • Peaceful site on the edge of the Highlands with spectacular views
  • Close to the A85, 10 minutes' drive from Loch Earn and Crieff
  • Next to a mountain biking centre and tea garden
'A wee slice of Scottish paradise' – that's how the owners of Comrie Croft describe this fab little spot on the edge of the Highlands. This is a properly natural site, with meadow and woodland areas to choose from; wherever you wander around the park, there'll be gorgeous green vistas to admire and plenty of fresh country air. The land around Comrie Croft is pretty gentle terrain (good news for mountain bikers, who can take advantage of the bike shop and cycle tracks next door), but if the backdrop of far-off hills strikes a chord you can easily get out to mighty mounts and rugged munros (that's Scottish mountains over 3000 feet tall, in case you didn't know). Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and the shimmering shores of Loch Earn can be reached within a 10-minute drive (or a half-hour cycle). This place is all about getting close to nature on eco-friendly, wild-style stays. Guests are invited to leave the car at home and use public transport or to get around by bike, with power provided by wind and solar energy (it's said that Comrie Croft's eco-conscious showers are among the hottest this side of Crieff). Need to stock up? Crieff (10 minutes’ drive) has plenty of shops and bars. There's also a tea garden next door for hot drinks and refreshments.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: Good Size pitch for Tipi Tent up to 3.5m. 3 corners of trees to pitch a tarp but you will need at least one pole to make it work properly. Pitch has a decent fire pit and a great view over the access road and lower camping area. Drop off zone right at the bottom and not too far to walk to the facilities.

Disliked: This pitch needs some work. 6 to 7 degree slope at the main pitch area makes it difficult to get a good night sleep and the ground really needs either rubber matting down or at the very least a good few bags of woodchips or other material as it has so many sharp stones and boulders in the ground risks the tent footprint. These boulders and sharp stones also makes the ground extremely uncomfortable if your not on a proper thick mattress. Couple this with the angle and your in for a rough night. The access paths could do with a slight cut back of the foliage. Levelled out and some soft material and this would be one of the best pitches on site. You may get away with a small two man tent pitched up near the camp fire its a bit flatter but just as stoney.

Local attractions

It may not be the biggest, busiest or most famous of the lochs, but Loch Earn (10 minutes' drive) has much to like. Walkers should find oodles of paths to tread pretty much all around its long, thin circumference; those up for a challenge might like to pack some mountain supplies and set out to conquer Ben Vorlich (35 minutes) on its southern side. Keen to take to the water? Make for Lochearnhead watersports centre (25 minutes) and get splashing. Loch Tay (35 minutes) is another prime spot for watery explores. There are 18 man-made islands or 'crannogs' dotted across the loch, most of which now lie deep underwater. To see for yourself what it might have been like to live on an Iron Age island hideaway, check out the recreation on display at the Scottish Crannog Centre (50 minutes). Many a family-friendly spot is to be found in the surrounding area, with attractions of note including Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre (15 minutes), Drummond Castle Gardens (20 minutes) and Stirling Castle (40 minutes). Parents who've sorted a sitter may also want to try out the wares at nearby Glenturret Distillery (10 minutes).
