  • Lively family site 10 minutes' walk from the beach in Torreilles
  • 20 minutes from Perpignan and the Yellow Train into the Pyrenees
  • Waterpark, spa and busy programme of activities and entertainment
Ah, the tropics – a splendid place for a holiday. Blue waters, palm trees, beach time, cool cocktails of an evening as you dance the night away to Latin beats. But then – the long flight, the expense, the tropical storms in high summer… Mais non! For this is not some far-flung island but Les Tropiques in the Mediterranean resort of Torreilles. The eight-acre site is generously bestowed with palms and beaut bougainvillea flowers, and a mere 10-minute amble from the golden sands, but an altogether more wallet-friendly and convenient option for most euro-travellers. All comers are welcomed here, from those seeking lazy days to the active-as-poss types. If you’re the kind that prefers to fill your days to the brim, gather friends for team sports at the multisports pitch, play a game of pétanque, tennis or table tennis, or head to the gym – there are all sorts of classes as well as all the usual equipment, and you can even enlist the services of a personal trainer should you wish to optimise your workout. Small people of a similar disposition have two playgrounds (a traditional one for younger guests and an adventure playground for the older ones) and a giant inflatable to fill their hours. That’s the hours in which they’re not ensconced in some sort of craft, game or general silliness at the kids’ club (five days a week in the summer months). Slow-paced holiday types looking aghast at these levels of activity needn’t worry – there’s plenty of space around the pools in which you can relax while looking out for the nippers as they zoom down the waterslides or splash the hours away in the paddling pools. Or you could trot over to the spa for a soak in the hot tub, a scrub in the hammam or a massage. A beautician and hairdresser are on hand here too to preen you into your most presentable self for your nights out. And, oh, those nights out – without even having to stray beyond the gates you can dine in the restaurant, take in a show, watch films or sports on the big screen, sing karaoke, dance in the nightclub… phew, it’s pretty much a non-stop party here in the tropics.

Local attractions

Should you find time among all the attractions to escape into the outside world, it’ll take you 10 minutes or so to trot down to the beach at Torreilles, where a long stretch of sand awaits for fun and games (or to sleep off the night before, perchance). There’s safe swimming in the lifeguarded area, access for disabled visitors and a dog-friendly area for accompanying canine chums. If it’s yet more activity you seek, there are pony rides, paintballing games, a go-karting circuit and a jetski park within a 10-minute drive or half-hour walk. For something a little gentler, hire paddleboards, canoes or kayaks from the town's watersports centre to paddle down the Bourdigoul river for a beach stopover. Club-wielders can play a round of golf on the 18-hole course half an hour away. Heading out of town, 20 minutes’ drive will take you either to the 16th-century Salses Fortress or to Cases-de-Pène to join trips up into the Pyrenees on the famed Yellow Train. It’s also about a 20-minute drive to get to Perpignan, to visit the historic big hitters – the Palace of the Kings of Majorca, the Campo Santo and the Castillet are top picks – or just to poke about in the palm-lined squares and smart arcades. (Keep a particular eye out for the pink marble paving of the Place de la Loge).
