  • Spacious farm site 20 minutes’ drive from Galloway Forest Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Newton Stewart and 25 minutes from Stranraer
  • Quiet, simple dog-friendly pitches with dark-sky stargazing
Lochs and castles, stanes and lush landscapes… it doesn’t get much more Scottish than this. If a holiday living out romantic visions of Scotland appeals, get along to Balloch O’Dee Campsite, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the Dumfries and Galloway town of Newton Stewart. The farm site is well placed for active forays out and about: it's a 20-minute car journey to Galloway Forest Park, where there are trails to follow, plus deer, goats and birds to spot. Mountain bikers are well placed here too, with not one but two 7stanes centres (Glentrool and Kirroughtree) within 30 minutes of base. Explores can start directly from site as well, as there are plenty of tracks through this scenic slice of countryside. After your outings, evenings can be spent together around the firepit, looking up at the stars (which are easy to see thanks to Galloway Forest Park’s Dark Sky Reserve status). This is a quiet site, so you should have plenty of peace in which to marvel at those skies.

Liked: Excellent site, with fantastic scenery and information on local area.

Disliked: My only criticism would be the showers were difficult to get dried in properly…. As needed to come out to dry feet….

Liked: Quiet and convenient for the ferry

Disliked: It rained heavily overnight, which made getting off the grass difficult. Felt really bad as we chewed the grass up a bit getting away

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The ‘vibe’ of the place. The facilities. Went to the music festival and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Relaxed camp site. Nice n small. Fire pits were good and we made use of one. Toilets quirky and lovely. Everything very clean. Water was nice and hot.

Disliked: Could do with a few more showers although we did appreciate that it was a busy weekend.

Liked: Great campsite. Perfectly located for exploring Galloway Forest. We chose it because it was close to the Dark Sky reserve, and it didn’t disappoint, we had great views of the night sky and stars.

Liked: Fabulous relaxed atmosphere in a beautiful setting

Disliked: Children running in between tents and the fire pits in close proximity to the tents. The tent next to ours was damaged by an ember from a fire pit

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Relaxed site, remote location, great views- and peaceful!

Disliked: No organised pitch layouts - so ended up with a good location only to have another van to squeeze in between us and the fence, but no biggy

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The atmosphere at this campsite was divine, amazing views, great facilities, clean and tidy. There are a couple of nice areas to chill if the weather is not too good. The folk that run the place are kind, friendly and very personable. Plenty of pitches near fire pits for that relaxing evening toasting your feet or marshmallows! Some really nice attractions and beaches only short drives away. We will definitely be visiting again.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The location is stunning if you want to just linger around the very peaceful camp itself. Or, if you fancy a run out, it is a short trip to coastal/inland towns and villages. The atmosphere is laid back - the host and staff are cheerful and look after the place very well. No complaints about the cleanliness of the toilets - they are quirky and pleasant to visit. Lots of bird life around and the site chickens are a delight to watch. All very relaxing.

Local attractions

Anyone drawn here by the possibility of active stays will be well chuffed by proximity to Laggan Outdoor (half an hour’s drive away) where there are zipwires to zoom along, archery to perfect, Segways to zip around on and slingshots for flinging self and friends through the air. Prefer splashier days? It’s 50 minutes to Galloway Activity Centre to have a go at watersports (and mountain biking and climbing). Other watery options are much closer at hand too – the nearest beach (Sandhead) is about 25 minutes from the site, as is the coastal/loch-side town of Stranraer. Stick around in Stranraer to explore the handful of museums, take a turn on the boating lake and visit the Castle of St John. Literary types should make the next chapter a stop at Wigtown – designated Scotland’s National Book Town – where well-timed stays should coincide with the annual book festival. For a taste of that classic image of Scotland, make sure to round out stays with a tour of the ruined Threave Castle, the Edwardian Broughton House and Garden (the one-time home of artist EA Hornel), and the hulking, stunning Culzean Castle, all between 45 minutes and an hour and 15 minutes from base.
