  • Watersports, high ropes adventure course and archery
  • A short drive from the historic market town of Launceston
  • Free hot showers, undercover BBQ area, play area and on-site café
At a whopping 730 acres, Roadford Lake is the biggest watersports lake in the south west and has all manner of aquatic capers, including windsurfing, sailing, rowing, canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding. There’s no shortage of action on land either, with a high ropes adventure course and archery. There's plenty of kit to hire here, as well as instructors whose time can be booked if you need a bit of a hand. Those with their own kit can bring it along and hit the water for a small fee – please ask at reception for details (third party insurance on your own craft is essential, please). For land activities, ask at reception when you arrive as these require minimum numbers. Spectacular lake views can be admired from picnic spots or waterside trails, and more adventurous bike trails are in the forest across the lake. In case of overexertion, head to the licensed café. Getting there is a matter of a 30-minute walk along a footpath that's also suitable for bikes and some pushchairs. (Please be aware there's one rather steep section and the final leg is not paved, so sensible footwear is advised. If you'd rather drive, the journey is doable by car in a few minutes.) The play area is also on this side of the lake. Roadford Lake Campsite is right on the lakefront, with modern showers, an undercover area for barbecues, a play area and the usual washing-up, disposal and recycling facilities. There's also a separate field available for groups. Dogs are welcome as long as they're kept on leads. To stock up on food and drink, local town Launceston is within easy reach and several village pubs serving food are easily reachable by car.

Non-electric grass motorhome, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The site is nicely located with good access to the water.

Disliked: The pitch we stayed on was quite wet because it was at the end where the ground sloped a little, meaning it was very soggy after mild rain due to run off.

Non-electric grass motorhome, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Nice pitch, clean facilities, friendly, helpful staff. Nothing to complain about. Loved hearing and seeing all the Canada Geese dawn and dusk.

Disliked: Due to so many cancellations, it would have been nice to be offered a pitch with electric hook-up. When I booked there were none available. When we got there, there were lots of empty pitches. It's not really a concern from me, but, with todays need for internet access, better wifi around all pitches would be nicer.

Non-electric grass motorhome, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We went canoeing and was great we was left alone with some parks don't let you do as much ALas these did. We did archery on thursday and the instructor was great and encouraged my lad to join in, I did pay for him but he don't like new activities, the bloke made the activity fun.

Disliked: No Activities on site, park is near the cafe orso a 5 min drive, walking wise suitable for older kids as younger kids would be a bit much for them.

Non-electric grass motorhome, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Nice clean, quiet and level site, good access, and really nice shower/wash block - good value for money. If you're interested in sailing/watersports, its all right next to the campsite too.

Disliked: Turned up just after 5pm but reception apparently closes at 4pm ? Had no idea which field we should pitch in and there was no pitch map that we could find, so ended up going around asking other campers. Typically ours was in the last area we got to - a Map would have been really helpful. If you want to use the cafe, its a long way away on the other side of the lake.

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Pitch 16 - Great location on the site and not all crammed in next to other campers. We enjoyed being out the way in our little cul-de-sac. Other pitches may have been a little too public for us.

Disliked: The communal facilities (washrooms & kitchen) could have been cleaner in my opinion, and I would have appreciated a bin specifically for food waste.

Local attractions

Due to its handy proximity to the A30 and its setting on the Devon and Cornwall border, Roadford Lake Campsite is a nifty base for sightseeing, seaside days, city shopping and active days out. It’s easy to dart across to the moor from here too, to check out Canonteign Falls and the ponies of Dartmoor National Park. Head north or south to explore the Devon and Cornish coasts: comely fishing villages, fab surfing beaches and large stretches of the 600-mile South West Coast Path are within easy reach. Tintagel Castle, said to be the birthplace of King Arthur, would make a good place to start. Under an hour’s drive away are Exeter, Plymouth and beach towns Newquay and Bude.
