  • Peaceful woodland park 10 minutes' drive from Wokingham centre
  • An hour's drive from Oxford, the New Forest and the south coast
  • Next door to a lake and country park for fishing and walks
Settle in for a stay at Wokingham’s California Chalet and Touring Park and you’ll be in good historical company: the park’s location was once part of Windsor Forest and a fave hunting ground of the Tudor royals. These days the five-acre site has been set up as a peaceful woodland park, with heaps of space for a quiet family break. Hunting is long gone, but neighbouring Longmoor Lake is a fab place for a spot of fishing: carp, pike, tench, roach and perch are up for grabs if you’ve got the relevant rod licence. Also just next door is California Country Park, a 100-acre park with wildlife trails, a playground, picnic areas, paddling pool and a cosy café for daytime eats. For further foodie needs, a pub, chip shop and supermarket are a five-minute drive away. If you’re looking to venture a little further afield, Wokingham’s well placed for exploring the attractions of Berkshire and beyond – with a drive of an hour or so you can be wandering around Oxford, spotting ponies in the New Forest or taking in the sea air on the south coast. Facilities on site are kept minimal to preserve the peaceful vibe, but all the essentials are in place: a laundry room (with clothes drying area), an outdoor washing-up area and a well-appointed toilet block with accessible facilities, hot showers and useful bits and bobs like razor points. Staff make a point of keeping an eye on this last to make sure it's always in fine fettle for guests.

Liked: California Country Park was a lovely well kept site. Very peaceful. The toilets and showers were very clean.

Disliked: The only thing really was that the WIFI wasn’t a very strong signal and cost £3.50 for the day.

Liked: Nice peaceful clean site, good warm shower block with good showers.

Disliked: Arrived around midnight, as I have done several times before. A key fob for the electric gate was left in the usual place. On this occasion the fob didn’t open the gate so I called the out of hours number. I was told that as it was after 8pm I was essentially beyond help and that it ‘said this on my booking’ which it does not. In fact the booking simply states that the office is open until 5 but arrival is possible at anytime. Fortunately I found a very helpful guest who called a very helpful onsite maintenance person who confirmed that the gate was in fact broken and needed to be manually opened and propped which he promptly did. In short, nice site, people on the ground helpful, people on the phone not so helpful.

Liked: A very well laid out campsite greeted by friendly staff

Disliked: used the Ladies shower on the Saturday morning which were very warm and clean, however on Sunday Morning found them to be very muddy, with toothpaste or cream all over the worktop by the washbasins, this was still there on the Monday morning even though someone had signed the check sheet on the back of the door to say the facilities were clean which they obviously weren't. We would use the site again and hope the cleaning was just a misfortune of the weekend.

2 bedroom cabin

Liked: Stunning surroundings, great quality accomodation (much nicer than expected!). Really clean, spacious, comfortable and well equipped. Great kitchen, even includes a freezer which wasn't on the listing. Our cabin had a terrace and outside seating. Peaceful site, great location; our adventurous nature loving kids loved the space and freedom plus the amazing playground across the lake. We didn't want to leave!

Disliked: We had a couple of issues at check in. Despite booking confirmation etc, they weirdly weren't expecting us so didn't have a key ready in the out of hours box- it was a Sunday. Then the key didn't work in the cabin so it was quite slow getting in. Service was a bit slow in reception/shop as it was often locked when it was advertised as open.

Liked: Lovely warm shower and toilet block. Important at this time of year. The site is in a perfect setting.

Disliked: Upgrade of shower area with a divider in this area so that clothes etc are out of the area which is wet.

Local attractions

There’s plenty of scope for fresh air in California Country Park (right next to the site), but if you fancy stretching your legs a little more, you’ve got plenty of choice: the South Downs National Park, New Forest and the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are all within an hour’s drive for scenic walks and bike rides. Golfers can pick from three courses within a 15-minute drive. On fine days, take the kids to meet the friendly animals at Lockey Farm, 10 minutes away. For less clement days, the Museum of Berkshire Aviation, Skiplex Indoor Ski Slopes, Coral Reef waterpark and Gravity Force trampoline park are all about a 20-minute drive away. For a bit of culture and history, it will take half an hour or so to drive to Windsor Castle, or around an hour to Oxford for wanders around the university’s colleges and punting along the river.
