  • Quiet glamping site surrounded by Derbyshire countryside
  • Alton Towers less than 15 minutes away by car
  • Sauna, hot tub, breakfast hampers, firewood sales and guest kitchen
A gorgeous glamping time for grownups and for kids… easily sorted at Calwich Under Canvas in Derbyshire. This quiet, family and countryside site has spectacular luxury yurts to bed down in after a day's exploring, and is within easy reach of heaps of family attractions including Alton Towers under 15 minutes' drive away. And there's a sauna… and a hot tub… and all prices include a breakfast meat hamper, locally sourced where possible (the site also caters for vegetarian and gluten-free diets too, so just specify when booking which you'd prefer). For seeking further supplies, Ashbourne is 10 minutes' drive away and Derby is within half an hour. And then then there's those yurts. Each is swishly kitted out with handmade wooden beds and plush bedding (linen and towels provided), a woodburning stove (a free basket of logs is given on arrival, and further logs, coal, sticks and firelighters can be purchased at reception), and a wooden terrace with outdoor furniture. The yurts aren't hooked up with an electricity supply, but candles and lanterns are provided. Guests can buy disposable barbecues from the team for sizzling supper alfreso, or use the well-equipped kitchen hut with two large hob ovens, two microwaves, two toasters, kettles, a sink, a fridge freezer, a large communal area, crockery, cutlery, utensils and pots and pans. The amenities at Calwich Under Canvas include bathroom block, set a few metres away from the yurts, with underfloor heating and flushing toilets, washbasins, hot showers, hairdryers and hair straighteners: you might want to avail of these last after a damp hour or two in the enclosed hot tub or sauna…

Local attractions

Alton Towers will doubtless be top of the agenda if you're here on your yurt holiday with kids; it's just five miles away and reachable in less than 15 minutes' drive. Other kid-friendly attractions in the region include the Alton Towers waterpark (that's for day two), or meeting and greeting the species at the Peak Wildlife Park in Leek, also 15 minutes' away. Kids of a certain size may also like a trip to the Heights of Abraham at Matlock Bath (35 minutes), for cable car rides high up above spectacular Peak District countryside; play areas, picnic spots and acres of handsome woodland are all at the site for when you descend back to ground. If you're here to hike, start out from Dimmingsdale (15 minutes), for walks through the Churnet valley – before a virtuous cream tea in one of the town's award-winning tearooms. You can also hike around the scenic surrounds of Carsington Water (30 minutes), a top outdoor spot with cycling, fly fishing, birdwatching, sailing, canoeing and windsurfing all available.
