  • Pods on a family-run farm just outside Barrow On Trent
  • Derby, Donington Park and East Midlands airport within a 20-min drive
  • A short walk from three pubs and the River Trent
What better way to start (or end, or spend) the day than with a waterside wander? Barrow On Trent, between the meandering River Trent and the historic Trent and Mersey canal, is especially well-placed for scenic rural rambles (accompanied by a well-behaved dog, if you’ve got one looking like it needs a hol). In the middle of these green surrounds, the peaceful fields of Hill Farm Caravan and Camping Site make a great base for hols in this quiet corner of Derbyshire. No matter when you come, stays in this family-run site's pods should be nice and cosy – each one is insulated and has electric heating included to keep guests toasty on chillier nights. Guests also have access to a smart toilet and shower block and a washing-up area, and are welcome to set up a barbecue for a spot of alfresco cooking.  Other dining options include the three local pubs that can be reached on foot or heading 20 minutes by car into Derby to peruse the city's range of restaurants and takeaways. Need to burn off last night's meal? Help is at hand: make tracks for the local watersports centre (five minutes' drive) or lace up your boots and head for the moors and valleys of the Peak District (50 minutes).

Bell tent (deluxe, hot tub)

Liked: We had one night in a bell tent with a hot tub. A wonderful experience and pure relaxation! The bell tent was so warm, clean and well equipped and the wood fired hot tub was blissful. The wardens were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Toilets and showers were immaculate. A lovely, peaceful campsite experience

Bell tent (deluxe, hot tub)

Liked: Absolutely loved our stay here! We chose the deluxe bell tent, honestly the best site we have ever stayed on. The tent was well insulated, clean, spacious, comfy and charming :) welfare facilities were extremely clean and constantly re stocked. The log burner hot tub was amazing and the festoon lights around it were a lovely touch. Tara was helpful and attentive, great host!

Disliked: Nothing to really dislike, would of liked to have stayed longer!

Camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: Booked last minute. Spacious 2 person hottub. Clean cabin. Hot shower. Lovely and warm cabin ready and heated up for when we got there. The man that showed us around was nice and not invasive. Provided a towel when we got ours all wet. If looking for a simple getaway would reccomend.

Disliked: Had to take own bedding(thankfully the owners messaged to let us know so we got it from a supermarket on the way). Shared toilets. Not clear walkways. Extremely basic and beds not too comfy but nice for last minute. Solar lights went off at night.

Camping pod (hot tub, plus)

Liked: The pod was spacious, well equipped and just what we needed. A one night stay was booked for NYE and the wood fired hot tub was a perfect way to spend the evening. The hot tub was heated on arrival (slight additional charge which was well worth it) although with the awful weather we had keeping it going proved a challenge. A member of staff did come round to everyone around 10pm to see if we needed help with the hot tubs or in general which was a lovely touch. We found the pod lovely and warm with the heater and the bed was comfortable. The only niggle would be there's no where to hang anything, which when using a hot tub was needed. Maybe a small rack to hang a towel from would be useful. The pods have had wooden gazebos built over them since the photos added to the site which was great as the weather wasn't good. They are adorned with solar lights, although sadly ours were the only ones not working. (I was cheered up when everyone else's only lasted an hour however due to lack of sunlight) The view was straight over Derby which gave us panoramic views of fireworks at midnight which was lovely. Saw lots of reviews mentioning noise from the road, we couldn't hear anything. Toilet block is lovely and modern and kept clean. The outside eco toilets were great, even used them in the morning and it wasn't cold or uncomfortable like you'd expect on the 1st of January. We did manage to get stuck in the mud due to the awful weather. The site owner came straight out to us on New Year's Day and recovered us. We can't thank him enough! We are already looking to come back for a little longer stay.

Local attractions

Barrow On Trent may be a peaceful spot, but if day trips are your thing you’ll likely appreciate its excellent transport links: major roads like the A50, A6 and M1 are all within easy reach. The local area's got a lot going for it, too: anglers can spend their days at nearby Robinwood Lakes (10 minutes' drive), while speed demons can zoom down to Donington Park race circuit (15 minutes) or East Midlands Aeropark (20 minutes). For more high-adrenaline adventure, head to the classic rides at Alton Towers theme park (40 minutes).  For days spent at a gentler pace, head to the house and grounds at Elvaston Castle Country Park (15 minutes) or the National Trust's Calke Abbey (15 minutes). More history is on hand at Derby's Pickford House Museum (20 minutes) – swing by here to try on some Regency costumes (if you think you can pull them off).  In need of some nature therapy? Head for the Peaks for walks in the spectacular valleys around Dovedale (50 minutes) or bracing hilly hikes like the Win Hill trail (about an hour and a quarter). For an unconventional stroll closer to base, pencil in a date with the Charnwood Forest alpacas (20 minutes).
