  • Immaculately kept site, family-run for over 30 years
  • Friendly and welcoming with outstanding views
  • Close to Gullivers Kingdom and 45 minutes' drive from Alton Towers
Pigs, ponies and proximity to top Peak District towns… farm the family out to Middlehills Farm Campsite. This is a mellow, peaceful and very friendly park that's been run by the Lomas family for over 30 years, set in 40 acres of countryside in the Peak District National Park and a quick drive from kiddie heaven Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. (Give them an even more heavenly holiday by an additional trip to Alton Towers, about 22 miles from your pitch.) Kids should be enthusiastically entertained by the chance to pet and give treats to the Middlehills pigs and ponies, and with the positively popular play park: owners' Nick and Liz's four-legged lot are often around to make pals with, and the play area is cunningly set near the pitches for grownups to keep a beady eye on proceedings. Facilities at Middlehills Farm are spotlessly kept and include a toilet and shower block (showers are subject to an extra charge, so remember to bring some coins along), a small shop selling camping equipment and basic bits, a chemical waste point and a washing-up area.

Liked: The facilities were perfect. There is a large play area for children where all the children played together. The washrooms and toilets were immaculate. The staff were really friendly. Im disappointed we were so late in the season and can’t go back again until next year. A great site.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: ilities were clean and comfortable.

Disliked: The attitude of a member of staff who spoke to my autistic husband so rudely! Our dog had escaped the tent, which was obviously unintentional, and scared us too! But the attitude my husband was spoken to was not at all helpful. He was obviously upset the dog had got out himself.

From the manager: Thankyou for your harsh review. We have constantly this season had people not listening to the rules and allowing their dogs off leads which causes upset for other dog owners and other campers especially when they crap in the field, and also chase my chickens, so I would hope you understand our frustration when your dog was also seen running free, but disagree he was harshly spoken too, and no need to play the autistic card thankyou.

Brilliant site for kids, with clean facilities.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Kids play area is fab. A few animals for the little ones, the chickens were really friendly! Toilets and showers were very clean although the showers are 20p per min. Good field although it is on quite a slope so you do roll a little bit off the air beds. Handy little shop too. Friendly staff.

Disliked: We stayed fri-mon and there was a BIG group of campers next to us and every single night they were extremely noisy. Quiet time is meant to start at 10:30pm but these campers clearly didn’t have any consideration for anyone else. They were shouting/laughing music on right up to around 2am on some nights. We had children with us from age 9months and they kept waking up every night due to the noise disruption. Two of the nights I did inform the campsite security who was friendly with me and did go and say “quieten down” but it did not stop the campers from bellowing. More should have been done. They did this every single night. In the end I took matters into my own hands on the final night and shouted across the campsite to shut them up at around 12:30am. The campers then decided to start laughing at me and found it hilarious and started making immature sounds. I was furious. The security should have been a lot stricter. It was appalling and he should have done more. We all had a lovely camping trip but this just put a massive downer on it knowing that every night we knew what we’d have to listen to. They should have been removed.

From the manager: Thankyou for your review. I'm sorry you experienced this awful behaviour from some other campers, unfortunately every so often we get some idiots on site as you do in every day life, who have no regard for others and security should have sorted this out for you, thats what they are there for, but if you were not happy with how he dealt with things then I really wish you had come to reception which is open 8am to 8pm and either my husband or myself would have dealt with this promptly meaning your remaining nights with us would not have ended like this. Hopefully see you in the future.

Local attractions

After you've taken the kids around Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers (that'll be the first three or four days of the holiday sorted), set aside some time for the grand halls and houses in the region, which should be seen firstly because they're fab, and secondly because these days out will be a sedate difference to white-knuckled days out at local theme parks. The knowledgeable team at Middlehills Farm insist that Chatsworth House is a must, and so should you say too, for spectacular gardens even the kids will go gaga for, a decent play area and a farm park for more petting. Bonus: the surrounding 1000-acre park is free to roam around all year round. Nearby Haddon Hall just outside Bakewell is also a sweet treat: film fans and goggleboxers might recognise its setting from the likes of Jane Eyre, Elizabeth and The Princess Bride (the gardens here are pretty splendid too). To tramp around old towns, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne are all within easy driving distance of Middlehills Farm – Peak District eats and other souvenirs should be picked up in each. The farm team has plenty more info on the local area in the site reception, but also quickly recommended are walks and watersports around/on nearby Carsington Water, and examining the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham from a cable car at High Tor.
