  • Family site on an organic farm 10 minutes’ drive from Cirencester
  • Chedworth Roman Villa 25 minutes’ drive; Cotswold Farm Park 35 minutes
  • Off-grid; well-stocked licensed shop and café; ebike hire
Once you arrive at Abbey Home Farm, 10 minutes’ drive from Cirencester, there’s absolutely no need to move off the site for the duration of your Gloucestershire stay. Why would you ever leave this 1,600-acre farm? Let’s start with the stunning views over Cotswolds fields, and move on to the organic farm shop packed with home-grown fruit and veg. It also sells dairy produce and meat from the farm cows for barbecues (bring your own from home), and – even better – it’s licensed too. There’s also a popular café that's just the spot for coffee to kick-start the day, plus homemade cakes and veggie lunches. All of this is within a 10- to 15-minute gentle stroll of the remotest holiday spots within the farm's woodlands and fields. The farm site is off-grid, with simple facilities including drinking water straight from a farm borehole, washing-up sinks, gas showers and compost loos tucked into the woods. And to top that, everything is crafted from reclaimed or recycled materials. There are wheelbarrows to roll gear in should you need it, as the pitches are spread all over the farm. Just one thing to remember: this site is not party central, so no noise after 10pm please.

Liked: Farm trail walk

Disliked: Got held up in horrendous traffic so couldn't make the 5pm cut off time. No contact or policy for late arrivals. Couldn't find the campsite and, after being on the road for 5 hours already, drove for another 30 mins looking. Luckily a local farmer pointed us in the right direction. However there is a securely locked gate with a code. Husband had to run quite far up the track and ask other campers for the code. By this point our baby was screaming, hungry and way past his bedtime. Not a great start to the stay, left us feeling really stressed out. Oh and half the toilets were closed. Surely there have been other campers who have had the same issue due to factors outside of their control. There should be a process in place for late arrivals when fees have already been paid.

From the manager: Hi Kirstie, Sorry you had a negative experience. We do have a cut off for check in time but if guests call the shop enroute explaining traffic problems we always make out of hours check in arrangements - one of us will always come to meet you. We check in all guests at the shop so we know exactly who is on site and the gate is locked for the security of our campers (this is a family farm and it is important to know who is with us). Our hopefully affordable cost is partly due to low admin costs and the simplicity of the system. Re the loos, all our 4 loos plus urinals that have been open for this season were open, it was our old ones in a separate location that were closed. With best wishes, AHF

Liked: Nice place, very "organic", nice views of the countryside from the tents site. Friendly staff welcoming you at the farm shop.

Disliked: This is supposed to be a rather calm and "connected to the nature" campground, but even though we were only 2 groups on the tents site, the other group (5 ladies) was so annoying and noisy that we had to tell them to keep it quiet after 10:30pm. And that did not stop them to start laughing the next morning at 7:30 am! Morality, you can have the most simple place, if the people frequenting it are bad-mannered, you're screwed. It's also quite hard to find the amenities when the night comes as we could not find the sinks to brush our teeth... Also only one of the 2 showers is heated up.

Liked: Lovely site, good facilities - if you don't mind compost loos. Relaxed atmosphere and beautiful woodland, would definitely return. The farm shop is also really nice, with a great selection of products and an Indian interiors section! This place is our idea of an ideal camp site.

Local attractions

Keen to explore the area on two wheels? Rent a bicycle from Cotswold eBikes on site, and set off down quiet rural roads to pretty villages built of mellow stone in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes’ ride). If you’ve got kids on board, make for the lakeside beach and floating inflatables at Cotswold Country Park and Beach (40 minutes), or let them burn off more energy on paddleboards and kayaks at Lake 32 Outdoor Centre (35 minutes). When only cuddling animals will do, it’s time to head to Cotswold Farm Park (35 minutes’ drive), to bottle-feed lambs, baby goats and piglets, see rare-breed farm animals and take tractor rides. In search of a bit of Cotswolds history? You’ll find it among the fourth-century AD Roman ruins at Chedworth Roman Villa (25 minutes’ drive), where you can admire ornate floor mosaics and the Roman version of central heating. If your interest is piqued, you can see more local Roman finds at the Corinium Museum (10 minutes), which has fine displays of sculpture, mosaics and jewellery.
