  • Quiet secluded site three miles from the cathedral city of Hereford
  • Close to the walking trail along the banks of the river Wye
  • Wild camping with toilet, shower and dogs and campfires allowed
Have peace, have quiet, have sightseeing, walks and books, all in a quiet secluded setting with active options available close by. The Valletts is a peaceful and remote site in the grounds of a farmhouse three miles from the cathedral city and museums of Hereford and eight miles from the bookish town of Hay-on-Wye. Footpaths run from the site down to the River Wye, where you can join the 136-mile path along the river's banks, passing ancient sites such as the neolithic (and rather fab) Arthur's Stone. Canoeing, golf and horse riding are also easy to access in the surrounding area – but whichever activity/peaceful pursuit you pick, do carve out time for a pint of the local cider to finish off your Herefordshire day… The site aims for a wild camping experience and facilities are basic; a hot shower and a toilet are available and there’s an outside tap for washing up. Dogs and campfires are allowed - please bring your own firewood (available from the local garage) and scoops/bags to clean up after your dog.

Local attractions

There's loads of lovely countryside around here for days out around the local footpaths, strolling alongside the Wye or pedalling peacefully among the Herefordshire countryside. It's easy to access the 136 miles of the Wye Valley Walk from here, for a hike six miles hence to Arthur's Stone, the Neolithic burial chamber  set high above Herefordshire's Golden Valley. For more organised outdoor days, a golf course is within three miles, horse riding within five and guided canoe trips along the Wye within six – or you could sample sections of the region's other walking paths on the Marches Way, Beacons Way, Usk Valley Walk and Offa's Dyke Path. In town, Herefordshire's capital Hereford is an ancient city with plenty of old piles to see, including its famed cathedral with chained library, medieval manuscripts and spectacular 13th-century Mappi Mundi: go see. There's a cider museum too, and a cider route, covering the apple (and perry pear) goodness in town and around the county. What goes excellently with cider? Books, that's what. Get along to Hay-on-Wye eight miles away to mooch around its dozens of bookshops, then take a tome to somewhere peaceful in the Brecon Beacons National Park or along the Herefordshire Cider Route.
