  • Quiet camping in the Wye Valley three miles from the Welsh border
  • Lake on site for fishing
  • Fire bowls and fuel for hire/sale
Blessed peace and biting fish… serenity seekers and amateur anglers alike can hope for a restfully quiet time at Burhope Farm Campsite near Orcop in Herefordshire, where the scenery is stupendous and the by-night stargazing stellar. Even the uninitiated should get a nibble at the carp-crammed fishing lake here – but if fishing's not your thing, you can simply lie beside the lake or on one of the rustic benches with a book or your own thoughts… When venturing off site, the farm is close enough to Herefordshire's and Shropshire's old market towns and active outdoor options for day trips, but peaceful enough for countryside unwinding and rural strolls in every direction: the Forest of Dean and the Brecon Beacons National Park are both within easy reach. Pitches are in a wide open field with wide open countryside views and access to a drinking water tap every two pitches, plus chemical disposal nearby and grey water disposal. If you're the sort that hopes for first-class amenities on a site too, you're sorted: the centrally heated loo and shower block, disabled facilities and recycling facilities on site are all immaculately maintained. Burhope Farm welcomes well-behaved dogs.

Liked: The Campsite was fantastic one of the best we have stayed at.the views were amazing and the owner pip one off the nicest people we have met in all the years we have been camping. The toilets and showers lovely and clean also heated. Will be back next year.

Disliked: The narrow lane up to the farm as we have a big motorhome but on leaving pip drove infront to stop any oncoming traffic. What a great lady.

Liked: Everything about this site is likeable. We have nothing to dislike. Friendly staff, clean facilities, quiet site and great fishing. This is on a working farm, so there are cows, horses, a donkey and cockerels etc. Early mornings are a treat! :) Hard standing with water and EHU right near the fishing lake. Happy days. If we are in that neck of the woods again, we will definitely go back for another stay. WIFI is not free, but for £2 for 8 hours or £40 for a whole year, its not expensive! ** When I asked about Laundry facilities, I was told they were coming soon ** - This will make the site even better!

Liked: Nice campsite, clean facilities (even though we did not really use them as we have fa fully serviced caravan). Beautiful views of the lake and fields at the back with cows scattered around and little hills in the distance. Reasonably large pitches, even though not quite levelled (had to use wheel chock).

Disliked: Paid wifi - in this day and age not only it should be free, considering the pitches are already more expensive than elsewhere (probably because they are all fully serviced). However if you are forced to pay (no 4G whatsoever), at least the signal should be decent which was not the case hence it was rather frustrating. The campsite is in the middle of nowhere so perfect if you are looking for complete peace and quiet but we found it a bit too far away from the closest towns or little day trips. Single track long access road (from pretty much every direction) which can be a bit stressful when towing and meeting cars and tractors going the other way.

From the manager: Thank you for your review sorry you felt you would not come again, obviously we are in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside and to get to us the approuch is along country roads. You made a comment about the price of our pitches I consider our prices to be very reasonable considering the price includes VAT which when deducted from £32 per night is £26.66 which includes everything fully serviced hard standing pitch, we don't charge extra for awnings or the showers or dogs so I think we are good value for money. Wifi is chargeable but at a very reasonable price we have paid to have fibre to the premises and it is a shame you did not mention to us when you were here that you were having issues we could have looked into it for you. There are a lot of variables such as what phones people have also their providers which all make a difference but thank you again for you comments.

Liked: Lovely peaceful site with great pitches and showers

Disliked: Why does Pitchup underestimate distances to places of interest etcEtera site, but tasks all provisions with yo on their website. The owner confirmed that most facilities were in excess of 4 miles away. We like to park up our motorhome and walk to places of interest and in the extreme heat we experienced, the 4+ miles each way was a bit of a struggle.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: I love the fact that the site is owner managed, Pip does it all from checkin to checkout and all the cleaning in between ;-). She is super friendly and can’t do enough to help you. I could guarantee if you run out of tea bags Pip would give you some of her own without a doubt. Shops are not far away though so this would not be an issue. The site is on a working farm in the middle of the beautiful Herefordshire Countryside. It is not a noisy farm at all, as some of the reviews state and I have very good hearing, it didn’t bother me at all, in fact I didn’t even notice any noise from the farm. It was dead silent during the night and we had perfect sleep. The pitches are large and flat and it’s not a large site which we liked. It has a beautiful lake with lots of fish that will follow you around the lake on the surface (waiting for food I guess) which was great to see. We only used the toilet blocks once as we have a shower and toilet in the van which we prefer to use but the toilet blocks were clean, tidy and well maintained. The site was immaculate with no rubbish floating about. The scenery is beautiful with lush fields, horses and cows around. This site is perfect for a piece full getaway in the countryside with a friendly and welcoming owner who cares about her site. We have our own wifi in the van so did not use the wifi on site but it’s there if you need it. TV signal was great from the van. I know the site will be having some new features soon such as dog run and washing machine and dryer which is always handy. This is an adult only site which suits us. Definitely worth a visit and we would stay again.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

History and fishing, canoeing and cycling, pottering around market towns and clambering over old old castles are all handy in Herefordshire, Shropshire and over the border in Powys and east Wales. The fishing in this area is a pull for anglers who come to try their luck at salmon, trout and coarse fishing on the River Wye. Pike of up to 30lb are landed from the Wye each year and it's said by those in the know to be one of the best rivers in Britain for bagging barbel. If you don't fancy fishing, paddle a canoe or kayak along the river on a self-guided or guided trip available from one of the many watersports operators in the area. More canoeing and fishing day trips – and mountain biking, hiking and horse riding – are at the nearby Forest of Dean. Both sides of the England/Wales border have more than their fair share of ancient castles to see – possibly because of all the ancient fighting between the two lands – and really it'd be wrong to come to these here parts without seeing at least one of them. On the English side, thirteenth-century Goodrich Castle, eleventh-century Wigmore Castle and fifteenth-century Hampton Court Castle and Garden (no, not the Henry VIII one) are the ones to view; on the Welsh, go south to super Chepstow Castle or west into the Brecon Beacons for castle ruins at Hay and Carreg Cennen.
