  • Secluded farm site in the Leicestershire countryside near Hallaton
  • A 20-minute drive to Rutland Water; half an hour to Leicester
  • See farm animals and collect fresh eggs for your breakfast
Chestnut Lodge Farm is a quiet farm site in the Leicestershire countryside, about five minutes’ drive from the village of Hallaton. This is a place to come when you’re after peace, seclusion and lovely views – the site is surrounded by meadows, ponds and small woodland areas (and all of that means plenty of wildlife to spot, too). This is a working farm, so you’ll also be able to meet various farm animals around the site – including the chickens, whose eggs you can collect for a tasty and very local breakfast. For other meals you can either light up your barbecue (source supplies for that 10 minutes away in Uppingham) or take a trip to the local pub for some traditional British meals – it’s about half an hour’s walk away (or five minutes in the car). Given the location, it’s no surprise to hear that there are plenty of places to get out for a rural walk or bike ride nearby – and you can stretch your legs further at Rutland Water, 20 minutes’ drive away. For other days out it’ll take you about half an hour to drive to Melton Mowbray (home of the pork pie) or Leicester, to see the National Space Centre.

Non-electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Spacious site, very very peaceful, lovely area. Lots of space for kids to play and explore. Animals on site (chickens, ducks, sheep, goats) for kids to see.

Disliked: Access road very rough and unsuitable for large vehicles or caravans. On leaving , had trouble getting up hill on loose surface, with wheel spinning. If I had a larger caravan it would be almost impossible without 4 wheel drive. Only one portaloo for site. Not really suitable for size of place. “Hard standing” area is rough, uneven and dirty. Value for money? No electricity, no showers, no hot water, and a portaloo?

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful, quiet, back to basics site. Views are amazing and the visits from the dogs were the hi-light of our stay! Just one porta-loo but nice and clean. Chickens, goats, ducks, sheep and a goose on site.

Bell tent

Liked: Everything about the site. Views are amazing, owners friendly, my 4yo and 15yo loved animals on farm. The yurt style tent we rented was amazing, comfortable bed and cosy decor. Fire pit and large bbq also highlights of our stay. Watching the bats at night in the woodland as we roasted marshmallows on the fire.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely area, down a long track surrounded by lush green fields and farmland. The location was excellent. Pitches we're level and grass was short. One toilet cubicle for all of the campers in the field. A lovely wildflower area and an area containing sheep, geese, goats and horses for children to view. Great area for stargazing with only a slight bit of light pollution from Leicester in the NW and Harborough in the S. I will definitely be using this site again.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The view was exceptional, you felt like you were in the middle of no where. All was quiet and calm and there was a lot of space. Looking round the farm was lovely.

Disliked: We were told to ring when we arrived. Straight to voicemail 8 times. Tried texting. No reply. So customer care was zero. Found ourselves a spot and enjoyed our stay. The view was slightly marred by a corner of the field being farm rubbish. Unsafe for the kids and not quite as good as the other 300 degrees of view. A sink to wash up or wash hands would be a lovely addition as would a second portaloo as there was sometimes a queue with 20+ people in the campsite.
