  • Adults-only glamping site with two large fishing lakes
  • Spectacular scenery and sunsets in a birdwatching haven
  • Local pub within a mile; two miles from brewery tours
Grownup fishing and grownup glamping stays just seven miles from Skegness: what a lovely Lincolnshire pitstop is Grooby's Pit. Run by very welcoming Tracy and Neil, this is a friendly adults-only site in seven acres of quiet countryside two miles from the town of Wainfleet (and its famous brewery). It's highly recommended that guests bring or acquire fishing kit before heading up here: the site has two coarse fishing lakes stocked with carp, perch, rudd, eels, bream, tench, roach, skimmers and barbel (and you'll get a discount while staying on site too – bargain). Fishing not your thing? Settle down for spectacular sunsets, sublime sunrises and splendid lakeside views in this birdwatching haven. Each glamping unit is fully-equipped and has an ensuite shower room. They also have a private fishing platform, a patio and a woodburner. The other amenities on site are smashing too, with a launderette, information point, free hot water and indoor double draining sink and worktop for washing up. There’s a dog exercise area for those staying in dog-friendly accommodation (they should be cleaned up after and behave nicely), and if they’re a mucky pup, there’s an indoor dog shower room with lukewarm water (and a ramp for easy access for larger dogs).

Route directions

If arriving via Boston please use the A52 and stay on it until you see the sign for Wainfleet (B1195). Turn left onto the B1195, follow the road through Wainfleet and continue until you get to Thorpe St Peter. Pass the church on your right, then turn left (signposted Thorpe Culvert Railway station). Go over the crossing then turn right. The site is on your left. Using directions from a sat nav from Boston will bring you a quicker route, but it is extremely bumpy with lots of pot holes.

Local attractions

A five-minute stroll will take you to the pub nearest to Grooby's Pit; once thirst is slaked there, wander down to Wainfleet (two miles away) for shops and Batemans Brewery tours and a beery visitor centre. Lincolnshire's seaside capital Skegness is seven miles away and has a fair bit of fun for all in its boating lake, Fairy Dell paddling pool, Natureland Seal Sanctuary and National Parrot Sanctuary. A bit further along the coast, beachy horse rides can be sorted 25 minutes' drive away and there are some super strolls to be had among the dunes and lagoons at Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve (also 25 minutes). For something with a bit more horsepower, head to Skegness Raceway (15 minutes) for a wheel-rattling programme of banger racing and monster trucks. Those who hanker after a bit of history on hols may like to take trips to Gunby Hall, a gorgeous 18th-century mansion (10 minutes), Bolingbroke Castle (20 minutes) and the fab flying collection at Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (20 minutes).
