If you’re anything like us, you’ll go online to have a look at things to do in Nottinghamshire, and spend two hours instead delightedly devouring the legend of Robin Hood. Did you know, for example – no, we should really stop there. Suffice to say that if you do yearn to find out about all things Hood, Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre should satisfy the thirst for knowledge of most. Although the Hood and his Merry Men couldn’t possibly have hidden in ‘Britain’s favourite tree’ Major Oak as it’s probably only eight hundred years old and Robin is likely older. (Unless Major Oak is an Ent, which we would like to think is possible.)

We should really stop there… back to camping in Nottinghamshire. It’s Maid for family holidays: the ancientness of Sherwood Forest Country Park can be followed by going underground at the old sandstone caves right under the streets of Nottingham city centre or by a day getting Angry at the Birds of Sundown Adventureland at Retford. And a bit more history: any Nottinghamshire campsite will be within driving distance of two Civil War sites in Newark Castle, sieged several times in the conflict, and Nottingham Castle, where the First Charles raised his standard to officially declare war. Quiver.
