  • Riverside site in grounds of a 17th-century house in Nottinghamshire
  • Close to Sherwood Forest and 25 miles from Nottingham
  • Space for outdoor activities; rope swing and stepping stones
You'll sense the history all around you at The Old Vicarage, from the old house to the remains of the water mill in the river bed. Stays here are in the grounds of a 17th-century house in the village of Elkesley, six miles from Worksop and 25 miles from Nottingham. Its grounds run down to the banks of the Poulter river, and are lined with stands of acacia, sycamore, ash and oak trees which were originally donated to the first vicar by the Duke of Newcastle in the 1830s. There's plenty of space around the site for traditional outdoor activities, with a rope swing and stepping stones over the shallow river and a bridge that's perfect for playing Pooh Sticks. In the surrounding area there are animal parks and nature reserves to walk around, or to head back further in time, you could take one of the trails through ancient Sherwood Forest, around quarter of an hour's drive away. Every bank holiday, the site opens up their Cave Bar, a cool little space built into an exposure of 500-million-year-old sandstone, with a chillout room, TV room and games, plus an outdoor terrace for sipping drinks out in the sunshine. Other amenities include a washing-up area and bathrooms with plentiful hot showers, toilets and baby changing facilities.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The settings around this old rectory are absolutely stunning. The river that runs through the camp ground is pristine and if this level of river was running through a small village or green it would win awards for sure. The amenities were spot on with wifi boosting around the site plus clean toilets and showers and everything else you need for a camping holiday (caravan aswell). We really enjoyed our stay and the owners are wonderful people, so polite and friendly. They also let us pick exactly where we wanted to pitch up. We left today all saying what a little hidden gem that we have found. Thanks for the hospitality and we will surely be there again.

Disliked: There was nothing we disliked about the place or our stay (if anybody comes to a place like this and has any complaints, we'll maybe the camping and caravan life isn't for them).

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely love this site, we’ve been here numerous times.

Disliked: Facilities could be better looked after. Broken shower head, fridge/freezer dirty.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Thanks for your review Can you contact us in regards to which shower head is broken please as these have both been replaced before the easter holidays? If you had informed us about the free use fridge freezer being dirty we could have cleaned this out for you. We do not go in this fridge freezer when it is in use as we do not want to throw away someones food by mistake. Regards The Old Vicarage Team

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The stream looked peaceful and the playground was loved by the kids. Not too busy and it was quiet in the evenings. We didn't hear anyone else after 11pm. The fire pit is a wonderful extra.

Disliked: The toilets were not cleaned or stocked enough. No separate sinks to wash or clean teeth. Went out for the day and came back after 2.30pm and toilets still in the same state as the morning. Other users were not respectful. Hand dryers don't work despite being told they do. As a family campsite, I didn't expect to smell weed coming from other users. This was also in the afternoon as we were packing up to leave a day early before storms. Luckily our kids had already gone and didn't have to breath it in. Husband wanted to complain but I wanted to come straight home.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The river was ace for the kids, they loved it along with the play areas. The ability to rent campfires was also a really good asset for us st a group of families. We really enjoyed our stay ❤️

Disliked: Only thing I could recommend would be putting and mop in the girls bathroom so people can soak up the water that seems to always be in there from people.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The site is lovely with basic facilities. Staff friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Electric hook up kept tripping leaving us without power for 50% of the time. Only 8 Amp but no real indication on what we could and could not plug in. Also no hot water in toilets or wash up facilities.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Janice I did have a conversation with you upon check out in regards to what you have stated in your review. Upon check in every group were told household equipment such as 2000 watt fan heaters (no matter big or small) could not be used on our site otherwise the whole site will trip out. You said to me you had a heater too and you didn't know if it was household or not. If there was a mention about the water this could have been sorted during your stay. The cleaner did not mention this when cleaning them? The wash house hot water was off through the night as the electric kept tripping due to the not allowed household fan heaters being used onsite. All sites have different amp of electric so people need to check before coming to each different site. Camping equipment should be used in all campsites. Kind regards The Old Vicarage Team

Liked: Lovely spot. Fine for a couple of nights with friends. Great walks from the site.

Disliked: Could do with better ventilation - cos it was raining and winter couldn’t really leave windows open which you could potentially do in summer.

Local attractions

The surrounding countryside has great places for walks and wildlife-spotting, with trails around the lakes and wetlands of Idle Valley Nature Reserve (15 minutes' drive) and lakes for fishing too. Then there's Sherwood Forest, 25 minutes away: some 450 acres of wildlife among ancient oak trees, alongside a wealth of biking and walking trails to take you through them. Adventure seekers can see it all from the treetops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, and the kids can clamber about at Robin Hood’s Hideout, an acclaimed natural play area. For family antics out of the forest, Sundown Adventure Park (20 minutes) has rides and themed playgrounds for the under-10s and families can also make tracks for Ferry Farm Country Park (45 minutes), to feed lambs, meet pigs and zoom about on go-karts and the adventure playground. An hour away and a major hub since Robin Hood's days, Nottingham still draws the crowds. Tour the castle and the caves, stop for a snifter in Ye Trip To Jerusalem (oldest pub in England, perhaps...), skate on ice at Motorpoint Arena and see what law and order meant in the Sheriff’s days at the National Justice Museum. For further historical wanderings, Creswell Crags presents an array of prehistoric caves in a cracking limestone gorge and Newark's castle, Air Museum and National Civil War Centre sum up the centuries very entertainingly, all around half an hour away.
