  • Family-owned adults-only holiday park on the outskirts of Tuxford
  • A 20-minute drive from Newark-on-Trent and Edwinstowe
  • Within walking distance of a pub and a working windmill and café
Craving an adults-only getaway with historic cities to explore and tall oaks to wander among? Good thing that you’ve happened upon Greenacres Caravan & Touring Park in north Nottinghamshire. Just one mile east of the A1 and on the outskirts of the historic village of Tuxford, this dog-friendly holiday park has just the spot for such happenings. Resident proprietors the Finneys (Billy and Sarah) run the show and they take great pride in keeping facilities to high standards, welcomes warm and stays memorable. The facilities include a toilet block with showers (for a small extra charge), a disabled shower room, wifi and a telephone at reception in case you need to phone home (to dish out the gossip on what you’ve been up to, of course). Barbecues have the go-ahead, and handily there’s an area put aside for cutting up your veggies and washing up any leftovers. Laundry facilities are also on hand, and if you need any info about the area, there’s tourist information available at the reception. Whether you’re on an overnight stop or basing yourself for a good helping of outdoor adventures, you don't have to venture far beyond the site’s security barrier to get out into the gorgeous Nottinghamshire countryside. There are top-quality hand-drawn ales and pub grub available at the pub five minutes’ walk away and everything from shops and a post office to pubs, takeaways and a friendly working men’s club in the village 20 minutes’ walk away. On the outskirts of the village, track down a working windmill with tea rooms too.

Local attractions

Historic towns and cities for wandering around? Kickstart your tour with Newark-on-Trent (20 minutes’ drive) on the river Trent, where there are castle ruins from the 12th century, a Georgian town hall and a county showground with antiques fairs throughout the year. Lincoln (40 minutes), Newark-on-Trent’s bigger brother you might say, has a medieval cathedral with a historic library of sorts containing early printed books. The Magna Carta lies in wait in Lincoln Castle, and the Museum of Lincolnshire Life turns back time to show the city in the Victorian area. A historic village visit too, perhaps? Edwinstowe (20 minutes) has Robin Hood legends, from the church where he supposedly wedded Maid Marian to Sherwood Forest 10 minutes’ walk outside of the village. There, track down Major Oak, an 800-year-old tree nicknamed Robin Hood’s tree.
