Smart lodges and a splendid woodland setting – that’s the fabulous mix on offer at Sherwood Hideaway, a luxury holiday lodge park within the lovely setting of Nottinghamshire’s Thoresby Hall estate. Set well back from the road and surrounded by the mature trees of Sherwood Forest, this is a peaceful and secluded spot for a rural retreat, whether you’re looking for a family fresh-air holiday or a cosy romantic break. Dogs are welcome in some lodges too, so your four-legged pal will be able to join you if you wish. Plenty of woodland trails stretch across the estate and out into Sherwood Forest, lending themselves well to walks (with or without your dog) and bike rides (with bikes available to hire on site for an extra charge). Fishing, golf, horse riding, clay pigeon shooting and watersports are all nearby too for a bit more activity – although there are also plenty of pubs, cafés and farm shops around if you’d like to take it easy and sample some local eats and drinks. Whichever option you choose for your day out, you’ll be coming back to a cosy wooden lodge that’s been decked out with all sorts of luxurious touches, including fluffy towels, duck-down pillows, Egyptian cotton bedding and top-notch toiletries. Each lodge has its own bathroom and well-equipped kitchen (with a fridge, cooker, dishwasher and all the usual small appliances). The luxury isn’t limited to the interior with these lodges – each one also has its own private hot tub where you can relax in the warm bubbles while soaking up your woodland surroundings.

Local attractions

Once you’ve taken a wander around the estate, stretch your legs a little more on a trip to Clumber Park (15 minutes’ drive), which has 20 miles of cycle trail as well as the world’s longest double avenue of lime trees. Rufford Abbey Country Park (10 minutes) is another good option, with a lake and a sculpture trail, or you might like to see the scenery from above while swinging through the trees at Go Ape Sherwood (10 minutes). You may well spot some wildlife as you wander, but for guaranteed animal sightings you’ll need to go to White Post Farm (15 minutes), which has both farm animals and more exotic beasts to meet. The 500-acre grounds of Wollaton Hall (50 minutes) are home to a herd of deer as well as some gorgeous gardens. For some urban time, take a walk around the cobbled marketplace in Newark (25 minutes), visit the Norman minster in Southwell (20 minutes) or head into Nottingham (40 minutes) to visit the castle and try out various aquatic activities at the National Water Sports Centre.
