  • Peaceful rural site with panoramic views of the Chiltern Hills
  • On the Ridgeway Trail, less than 30 minutes from Oxford and Reading
  • Dog-friendly site; campfires permitted, with wood for sale
Disconnect from the world and plug in to nature at Ridgeway View Campsite, a spacious, back to basics site under 30 minutes by car from both Oxford and Reading. Generous pitches here are surrounded by Oxfordshire wheatfields with the Chiltern Hills beyond. This quiet site takes its name from the ancient trackway it backs onto. Now one of the UK’s popular National Trails, the Ridgeway 87-mile route is known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’ – walk here to follow in the footsteps of 5,000 years' worth of travellers. Less than a mile away, visitors can link up with the wildlife-rich Thames Path too. Also within walking distance (just far enough to build up an appetite for lunch) are several great pubs – plot your routes to take in the hostelries in Crowmarsh Gifford or Hailey. Something a bit more active in mind (or need to get some stress out)? Book a session at Ridgeway View's own axe-throwing range, which is a 15-minute drive away from the site. For stocking up on essentials, taking tea and cake or pottering around the shops, pop to the historic market town of Wallingford (five minutes’ drive), where you should also seek out the blue plaque for famed novelist Agatha Christie (British TV watchers may also recognise the area as the setting for Midsomer Murders). Half an hour’s drive to the north brings you to Oxford, and the same distance south is Reading. Guests have access to just a few back to basics facilities, including portable toilets and cold-water showers. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if raised off the ground – firewood is available to buy, and cooking slabs can be hired. Considerate dog owners are welcome and there’s plenty of space nearby for the canines to stretch their legs. On the farm there’s a no-noise policy at night past 10.30pm, so that everyone can enjoy a bit of rural peace.

Liked: Beautiful setting, easy check in, peaceful, back to basics in a good way! Amazing bird of prey circling - buzzard or red kite? We weren’t sure. We stayed one night and went to a friend’s birthday in a neighbouring village. Didcot Taxis found us and dropped us off easily. Good phone signal. Highly recommend .

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The location is absolutely perfect for my many walks in the area, both on and off the Ridgeway. This is a spacious, quiet and secluded campsite. Perfect for dog owners, as there is easy access to public footpaths.

Disliked: At £12 for a fire pit, and an additional sum for firewood, lighting a fire is rather prohibitively expensive, especially for one person.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Katrina, So glad you enjoyed your stay. The cost of our firepits accounts for the hire of the firepit for your stay and a set of logs for a night, so the cost is for firepit hire + a set of logs. It is then £8 for further logs for future nights. We think this is quite reasonably priced, but you can save £2 by booking the firepit on the day, as they are £10 to book on site. We think these are reasonably priced, and we're unable to charge less as then there wouldn't be any money in them for us as a small business. The cost of wood has increased due to inflation, hence we need to charge an amount that it justifies the labour and cost of providing them, otherwise we would run at a loss. Though we always recommend bringing your own raised firepit if you don't want to hire one next time.

Loved it… Beautiful views Fire pit provided & wood Wonderful will definitely be…

Liked: Loved it… Beautiful views Fire pit provided & wood Wonderful will definitely be back again.

Disliked: Nothing but a suggestion… With a small site like that Compost loos would be great… Much more in keeping with the nature setting… Spread out over the site they wouldn’t be over used & have plenary time to compose down in the off season.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: So glad you enjoyed your stay! Unfortunately compost loos aren't something that would work on site, for the level of traffic we get at weekends and over the busy summer months the waste generated would be far too much for compost loos. When you stayed was outside of peak summer holiday season - across the summer holidays we often have hundreds of people on site, and compost loos wouldn't be able to handle this amount of waste without wreaking havoc in terms of smell on site. Whilst we like the idea of compost loos, they simply can't manage the volume of waste required during busier periods.

Local attractions

On a summer’s evening, there’s nothing quite like messing about on the river – hire a boat nearby at Wallingford Bridge or Benson Waterfront (both five minutes' drive). Sipping a glass of wine comes a close second, so Brightwell Vineyard (10 minutes) could be a good shout too. For wildlife enthusiasts, Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve is 10 minutes away by car or a pleasant hour’s walk taking in the Thames Path along the river. And children (and quite possibly grownups) are bound to love a visit to Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes’ drive). To get the blood pumping, you could brave the local skydiving (five minutes) and watersports (15 minutes) centres.
