  • Shepherd's hut by an ancient millstream 20 minutes' drive from Ludlow
  • Private vintage caravan with shower, kitchen and cooking kit
  • Firepit, barbecue and 'hot tub' made from a cast iron Victorian bath
Flit between England and Wales’ spectacular rural landscape on a stay at Lower Buckton, in the grounds of a country house close to the border between the two nations and within easy reach of riverside walking trails, meandering lanes and leafy woodlands on both sides. Accommodation at this spot near Leintwardine, 20 minutes’ drive from the pretty Shropshire town of Ludlow, is in a smartly restored shepherd’s hut by an ancient millstream and near Forestry Commission land. The Offa's Dyke Path, Mortimer Trail and viewpoints looking out across mid-Wales, Shropshire and Herefordshire are all within driving distance for getting out into the countryside After strolls, bike rides or horse riding trips on local footpaths and bridleways, snuggle up in your hut’s comfy double bed under luxury linen and a wool duvet, cranking up the woodburning stove to keep things cosy (or to boil the kettle for a cuppa). Shepherd’s hut guests also have private access to the vintage caravan next door, a living space kitted out with a gas-powered shower, gas hob, gas grill and fridge, as well as seating, a table, kitchen equipment and storage space. And if you’re seriously craving relaxation? There’s an outdoor ‘hot tub’ made from a Victorian cast iron bath raised on blocks: just fill with water, light the fire underneath and sink back to watch the bats and listen to the owls. The site also has a firepit for cooking in a traditional hanging pot, a charcoal barbecue and cold running water piped from a private spring. A compost toilet is close to the hut.

Local attractions

Cultural sorts might want to make their way towards the castles in this part of the world – perhaps the fortified manor house of Stokesay (20 minutes’ drive) with its 17th-century gatehouse and a tower offering top views out over the Shropshire Hills, or the atmospheric ruins of 11th-century Clun Castle (25 minutes), set beside a rushing river. Ludlow Castle (25 minutes) has an equally fine setting on a promontory towering above the River Teme; this medieval structure’s in the market town of the same name, which is also known for its black-and-white Tudor houses and independent shops. Rather roam woods than browse boutiques? Mortimer Forest (25 minutes) has around 2,500 acres of tree-lined landscapes to check out. For long-distance roving, the Mortimer Trail (also 25 minutes) starts from Ludlow and carries on through the Marches’ valleys and hills before ending in Herefordshire.
