  • Off-grid glamping site on a farm 25 minutes’ drive from Shrewsbury
  • Ironbridge museums 40 minutes’ drive; Ludlow 45 minutes
  • Fishing and wild swimming; hot tub; nature walks and roaming deer
Looking for a glamping holiday with a twist of pioneering spirit? At Feather Down - Upper Shadymoor Farm, a 10-minute drive from the Shropshire village of Dorrington (and 25 minutes from Shrewsbury), you can stay in a luxury safari tent with no electricity. It’s all about reconnecting with a simpler life here, and the vibe is romantic evenings by candlelight if you’re travelling as a couple, or cosily lit board-game tournaments if you’re here as a family. The borders of the site follow those of a deer park laid out in 1284, and you’ll meet plenty of antlered beasts grazing around, in addition to farmyard residents such as cattle, horses and sheep. Owners Kevan and Joy also arrange nature walks through the nearby hay meadows and woodlands, where you can forage for wild garlic and catch fleeting glimpses of owls and kingfishers. And here’s the real kicker about the site: with a stream and a number of natural pools spread over 200 acres, you can spend your holiday dipping in and out of the water, wild swimming, boating or fishing for trout. If you prefer your water at rather warmer temperatures, there’s a hot tub from where – glass in hand – you can keep an eye on the kids as they dive into the pond from the trampoline. Your canvas hideaway comes with an ensuite shower room and a fully equipped kitchen, so meals are easily sorted. The farm runs an honesty shop that stocks venison, pheasant, duck and other game meats, in addition to fresh bread and a range of home-cooked ready meals, and there’s also a communal pizza oven. And with Ludlow, one of the country’s gastronomic capitals, a 45-minute drive from the site, you might well decide to indulge in a little fine dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Local attractions

The medieval streets of Shrewsbury are lined with pretty half-timbered buildings and independent restaurants and shops. There are military exhibits in the museum in the 11th-century Shrewsbury Castle, or you could have a picnic on the vast lawns of The Quarry. Walking and cycling trails cross the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (25 minutes’ drive), where you might want to check out Mitchell’s Fold Stone Circle or the medieval architecture of Stokesay Castle. The Iron Bridge on the River Severn at Ironbridge (40 minutes) was built in the late 1770s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution. This red-metal structure spanning a forested gorge was the first of its kind and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site with a series of award-winning museums attached.
