  • Adults-only retreat in the Cambridgeshire countryside
  • Eco-friendly farm site with free electricity produced by its own wind
  • An hour and 20 minutes from London
A haven for adults – and a haven for wildlife: come to Cambridgeshire and pitch up at lovely Lode Hall, among the deer, birdlife and other small critters scurrying about. All is set up here for guests to experience eco living in a rural and secluded location – free electricity from the site wind farm, for example – but there are mod cons aplenty for those who like their creature comforts: free wifi, centrally heated shower and loo block, disabled facilities, laundry facilities, a washing-up area, chemical disposal point, and a games room with pool table for competitive/rainy days. If you do like to be in rural seclusion but also like to know you're near civilisation, you can be at the local railway station (Downham Market six minutes away) an hour and 20 minutes after leaving London; Ely is 11 miles away; Cambridge or Peterborough are within an hour, and farming oneself out to the Norfolk coast can be done in a mere 40 minutes. Lode Farm is dog-friendly and has walks on site as well as a dog exercise area, so do bring (or borrow) a pooch too.

Local attractions

Lots of lovely little Cambridgeshire and Norfolk towns, nature reserves and Fens walks are easy to get to from Lode Hall, along with historic houses, coastal walks and shopping shopping shopping in the likes of Ely, Peterborough and King's Lynn, all within easy driving distance. Nearby Downham Market on the edge of the Fens is one of the oldest market towns in Norfolk and still has a market day on Fridays and Saturdays; catch the train from the station here to King's Lynn if you're leaving the car back at base. Close by, Welney is the place for messing about on the river via a canoe safari at its Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust – birdwatching naturally available here too. The Fens have been called 'the holy land of the English' because of the many cathedrals and churches dotted about the countryside: Ely's, visible for miles around, is a beaut, and Peterborough's dates back to Norman times (the three cathedrals at Durham, Peterborough and Ely are regarded as among the most important twelfth century churches to remain mostly intact). It'd be clever to take at least a day in gorgeous Cambridge too, to see sights like the famous college, former haunt of the likes of Tolkien and CS Lewis, or to punt on the River Cam. Festivals are held throughout the year and the city has a nicely healthy student nightlife. Meanwhile, those who like to study history (or architecture, or gardening) can examine the old houses and buildings of the region: churches and cathedrals aside, green and heritage highlights include the great gardens at Peckover House, medieval Crowland Abbey, the moated manor house Oxburgh Hall, and the former priory house of Anglesey Abbey.
