  • Bushcraft classes in fire lighting, shelter building and more
  • Communal firepit area and bacon/sausages for sale
Ever been to a site which is so good you just want to keep it under wraps? Wend your stealthy way to exceedingly popular The Secret Garden Touring Park in Cambridgeshire’s Fenlands, with accommodation in a green countryside setting within a two-acre garden. You'll spy all sorts of little touches that keep guests coming back: much like the local and migrant wildlife regularly flutters to the flowers and shrubs of the garden, all meticulously developed over years by owners Neil and Lesley to draw in nearby birds, butterflies and beasts like jays, woodpeckers, stoats and hares. The site also has its own herd of Gloucester Old Spot pigs and a flock of cheery chickens. Not quite undercover enough for you? Take one of the site’s bushcraft and survival classes to pick up skills in fire lighting, shelter building and other crafty activities; show off your skills later in the communal firepit area by cooking up some of the locally made bacon and sausages for sale in the site shop. Other little touches at The Secret Garden include regular sausage and beer tasting sessions, an on-site distillery, a games room and a ‘hobbit hill’ for the kids to hide out in. All guests have access to two modern shower and toilet blocks, and the kitchen with laundry facilities.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Loved the site, it was a little boggy but that was October half term for you, nothing the site itself could help! Facilities were immaculate. It was so cosy having your own little nook. The restaurant on site serves amazing food. Will definitely return.

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike!

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The site, privacy and helpful staff. Loved the Potting Shed for afternoon drinks.

Disliked: Nothing. Although better signage on arrival as pulled into the wrong area and found it difficult to turn round with caravan on.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This place was an absolute gem, stumbled upon this place as a last minute camping trip and I don't think we could have picked anywhere better, each pitch feels nice and secluded and facilities are very clean and tidy! There is a lovely little bar on site and even an enclosed dog excersise spot which was perfect for both our fur babies! We cannot wait to go back again with family!

Disliked: Coming home!

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Booked site to attend performance in attached Barn - perfect evening, and great facility. Grounds are in quiet location but cycling distance to Wisbech

Disliked: Shower and amenities block really dated and filthy - no obvious cleaning routine, and when addressed the issue it seemed staff were too busy to make this a priority. Only very basic cleaning it seems - cobwebs in kitchen pre-date the summer I suspect. . I noticed reviews from 2 years ago mentioned the state of the sofa - looks like the same one. 2nd night ruined by feral children running amok (quiet time doesn’t start until 11pm), and a private memorial function in the barn playing live music from early afternoon until late. No where to sit quietly to avoid this, and sitting at nearby bar felt intrusive to the mourners. Owner apologised but would have stayed elsewhere if they had informed us in advance- only ticketed events are listed on website. No offer of refund. Sadly, not rushing to return unless this is addressed - if we can be sent a welcome email, I’m not sure why we couldn’t have been informed in advance of this event? At least music distracted from screaming children…

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The secret garden has a truly magical atmosphere which was clear from the beginning, the lights on the trees and quiet calm environment really helped to make us feel special. Loos were clean and well lit, showers were hot and easy to use. The little pigs were an additional treat. We were even allowed a cheeky beverage when the bar was about to close, which when camping with a baby who only just fell asleep was extremely well appreciated!

Disliked: Would have preferred more grass on our pitch as when it rained mud splashed up on our tent.

Local attractions

Wisbech, Cambridgeshire’s biggest town, is two and a half miles away and has a good selection of museums, shops and Georgian architecture to view (Dickens fans might recognise some of the town’s buildings from the Beeb’s adaptation of David Copperfield from 1999). Octavia Hill's birthplace house and museum, celebrating the many good deeds of this Wisbech woman, is also in the town, or you could reach heady heights at the Fenland and North Norfolk Aviation Museum to see aircraft and displays from across the ages. The National Trust’s Peckover House in Wisbech has great gardens (and croquet on the lawn), as does local brewery Elwood’s, with four acres of greenery as well as a maze to get lost in. Both the RSPB reserve at Ouse Washes in Manea and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Welney in Norfolk are within 15–20 miles if your whistle has been whetted by the wildlife watching on site at The Secret Garden; take a trip around the lakes of the Fens or east to the Norfolk Broads for more species spotting from boat and shore. Within driving distance for day trips you can also reach Cambridge and Ely to the south, Norwich to the east and the scenic seaside towns of Hunstanton, Wells-next-the-Sea and Sandringham to the north, or drive a little further to reach Skegness and Great Yarmouth.
