  • Back to nature camping in a secluded Norfolk meadow
  • Five minutes' drive from Beccles; Southwold half an hour
  • Quiet site with rewilded areas for nature and privacy
What's that rustling in the long grass? At The Wildings Elms Meadow, it could be any number of birds, mammals or insects, as this peaceful site in the quiet East Anglian countryside is passionate about protecting the local area's biodiversity. Plenty of areas around this small-scale site have been left aside for nature, including a wildlife pond with a viewing platform. You're welcome to explore the grounds during your stay here – the little ones may particularly like the wooden playhouse hidden away in the greenery… With spacious and secluded pitches, The Wildings Elms Meadow is a place to escape the hectic pace of everyday life and tune into the rhythms of the natural world, from the dawn chorus in the morning to the crackling of a fire and stargazing at night (firepits are available for hire, and wood can be bought from site staff). Facilities here include a toilet and shower block, a communal kitchen area as well as access to running water and a washing-up area. Dogs are welcome to come and join you here, but they must be kept on leads at all times. Please note that parking is separate from the pitches to protect children and wildlife (wheelbarrows are available for arrivals and departures). The Wildings Elms Meadow is on the edge of the small village of Aldeby. For shops, pubs, restaurants and snacks, you're about three miles from the pretty little town of Beccles (five minutes' drive).

Liked: Lovely campsite, great clean amenities, and a lovely location to explore Suffolk and Norfolk. Great for camping with young children. We'd recommend Covehithe beach (20 mins) for dogs and children, and Sutton Hoo (60 mins) for history. Liked the Ecofriendliness, easy recycling.

Disliked: - Road noise - No view - some pitches were 'nicer' than others. - Never met the owners, but they did WhatsApp message.

Liked: Loved this site. So charming, many thoughtful features like honesty box system, in the kitchen there were snacks, bottles of ketchup, fridge and freezer available. Free roaming chickens kept us entertained. Kids run a little tuck shop some evenings where we could get goodies like fresh laid eggs and marshmallows for the campfire. Fire system was also great very good burning firewood properly seasoned to purchase on site. We will absolutely be back again possibly once a year and with more family members. Location was so perfect.

Dragonfly shepherd's hut

Liked: All pitches good distance to toilet & communal kitchin, nice facilities, well lit, eco friendly camp,

Disliked: Maybe another fridge in communal kitchin or somewhere, when camp is full there is no room in the fridge.

(1) electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: We received a lovely welcome and the facilities were great including Wi-Fi. The pitches are all separate which meant you had a good amount of privacy.

Disliked: The parking was a bit tight, but I believe that was due to others bringing more than one car. Our pitch was quite muddy where the grass had died, resulting in quite a messy tent. Unfortunately had some noisy neighbours who weren’t too good at observing the 9-9 quiet hours.

Liked: Very quiet and clean site. Pitch sizes are great, we had no problem to accommodate our large tent and a gazebo. Reasonable price for a fire pit hire. The owners are lovely and welcoming.

Bumblebee camping pod

Liked: Loved everything about this small but perfectly formed campsite. Our pod was extremely comfortable and had everything we could have wanted. I particularly liked the way the site is set up giving each pod or camp area privacy with meandering footpath’s mowed into wildflower banks. Great private bathroom with our pod too! Will definitely book again!!

(1) electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely site. Wanted something quiet, yet family friendly. Ideally set just on the Norfolk / Suffolk boarder, we were 5 mins drive from Beccles for all amenities you could need when camping - including tesco delivery and even dominoes delivered for the first night when we had no energy left to cook.. just make sure you give them proper directions to the campsite! Onsite, the owners were very helpful, and despite a minor issue, they couldn't be more supportive! Lots of wildlife, and despite its size, you don't feel you're on top of one another. There's plenty of facilities with fire pits for hire, toilets and showers, washing up area, fridge, microwave, hot plate, and kettle. We used the electrical hook up pitch as we were there for 9 nights. Will definitely visit again. Well worth every penny.

Liked: Superb. Friendly and welcoming. Beautiful quiet site. Bat houses, cat and chickens wandering around. Flowers, trees, open fields and twinkly stars. Great little communal kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave and kettle. Snacks and biscuits through honesty payment. Wi-Fi and good mobile reception. Very clean showers and toilets. Little tuck shop in the evening. Cute playhouse filled with toys. Fire pits with grills for cooking and firewood etc to purchase. Perfect environmental ethos with good recycling facilities and naked sprout toilet roll! Everything has been thought of to ensure you have a relaxing stay. Will certainly be back and highly recommend.

Disliked: Nothing!

Local attractions

There's lots to do in the local area, starting with the gorgeous Norfolk and Suffolk coast. The pretty seaside resort of Southwold (25 minutes' drive) is a great place to start, while nearby Walberswick (35 minutes) is a top pick for crabbing with the kids. If you're after a wild, natural beach that's great for a walk or picnic, try Covehithe (25 minutes), a mix of sand and shingle. This site is also right on the edge of The Broads National Park, so hire a boat in Beccles (five minutes), try paddleboarding in Wroxham (40 minutes), or bring your binoculars and head off birdwatching at any one of the many nature reserves dotted around the surrounding area. Kids coming away with you will almost certainly appreciate trips to BeWILDerwood Norfolk (40 minutes) in the Broads too – it's got trails, swings and other forest-themed activities that are bound to keep them entertained for hours. Time in town is easily arranged if you feel like a change of scene, whether you're heading to Norwich (35 minutes) for a wander around its castle and cathedral or fancy visiting breweries in Ipswich (an hour) or shopping in Bury St Edmunds (an hour).
