How would you like to stay at an award-winning forest park with walks through sheltered tree groves, a sun patio to bask on, plenty of play areas for the youngsters and hilltop viewpoints taking in sandy beach, the Norfolk coastline and the famed golf course at Royal Cromer? You would? Then take the family tree to Forest Park Caravan Site, a pristinely pretty park set among 100 acres of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There’s loads to do on site alongside the woodland walks and gaping at the views, such as plenty of grassy space for ball games and outrunning the older folk, an indoor pool, and cycling routes around the site. Forest Park is a mile from the seaside town of Cromer where crabs have always been the cuisine du jour, but there’s plenty of fare dished up at the park too, with a clubhouse serving light lunches and refreshments (opening times vary). The well-stocked park shop sells toys, camping equipment, newspapers and gifts as well as a good selection of groceries, and there are freshly baked croissants, bread and pastries on offer too: just follow your nose.

Route directions

From Norwich Follow Cromer road from Aylsham until you arrive at the T-junction signposted Cromer (left) and North Walsham (right). Turn left and follow the road until a turn off to the right appears signposted Northrepps Village and a brown caravan sign. Turn right and then immediately left, and within fifty yards follow the road under the railway bridge until you reach a T-junction. Turn left and Forest Park will be on the right. From Kings Lynn Go through Cromer town centre (past the large church on your left) and when you reach the traffic lights, turn left signposted Mundesley. Follow this road (Overstrand road) until you pass the country club on your left; you will reach a right-hand fork with a horse trough. Take the right-hand road (Northtrepps road) at this fork. Forest Park is at the top of the hill on the left.

Local attractions

You can see the village of Overstrand from Forest Park, where there’s a beach below the village’s clifftop location; from here walk the mile and a half into Cromer with its funfair, zoo, theatre, two museums and that famed Cromer crab to buy in the town or catch your own off the pier. If you’re angling for other fishy treats, try fishing for bass off the pier or taking a boat out to sea to land some cod. Two long-distance walking routes finish in Cromer: the Norfolk Coast Path which runs 45 miles from here to Hunstanton and the Weavers’ Way, a 56-mile route going to Great Yarmouth. For shorter strolls, there are the miles of the Norfolk Coast AONB to explore, with easy access routes for buggies and wheelchairs, or to see the sights in style take the award-winning Coasthopper bus from Cromer to King’s Lynn. Wildlife including seabirds and seals can be spotted from many places along the coast, with seal-spotting boat trips available from Morston and Blakeney. The kids should enjoy a whirl around the skateboard park at Mundesley and watching Dad fall off, Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens at Great Yarmouth, the Pleasurewood Hills Theme Park at neighbouring Lowestoft and the Dinosaur Adventure Park at Norwich. The award-winning adventure park BeWILDerwood at Norfolk has treehouses, zip wires and critters called boggles to goggle at. Grown-up activity in the area includes exploring Norfolk’s many history and heritage sites: make like Her Maj with a visit to the royal retreat of Sandringham, roam around the rhododendrons at Sheringham Park or get lost wandering around the Holkham Hall estate with beaches, nature reserve, woodland play area and outdoor theatre. Prefer to ramble? There are three acclaimed gardens within eight miles of Forest Park: Felbrigg Hall, Mannington Gardens and Blickling Hall. Day trippers can boat on the Broads or take in Norfolk seaside and market towns such as Great Yarmouth with its pleasure beach, Sheringham with its weekly market and Poppy Line Steam Railway or the art galleries and shops of Holt. Norwich has old architecture, several theatres and a must-see heritage cathedral; it’s also one of the top ten shopping cities in the UK and has one of the biggest outdoor markets in England. Shoppers and youngsters alike can get lost in Hoveton’s Wroxham Barns, home of shops, funfair and junior farm.
