  • Disabled-friendly pub site on the edge of the Norfolk Broads
  • Two miles from the A143
  • Open farmhouse kitchen, log fire and spacious dining area in gastropub
You might reckon that a place called the White Lion would be a pub campsite. And you'd reckon right – but without a visit to Wheatacre's White Lion Campsite on the edge of the Norfolk Broads, you might not reckon on its warm and amiable welcome, friendly regulars, peaceful surroundings and splendidly rural setting while not having to stray too far from civilisation… Newly taken over by Nicola and Joe in 2016, the White Lion is in a countryside location for those who want to make the most of the Norfolk Broads but be within easy reach of the facilities and attractions of Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth and Norwich. It's on two acres of grassland surrounded by mature trees, a mile from the Broads and half an hour from Southwold. And you might reckon you want to hear about the pub. The White Lion is a gastropub and a free house, with a spacious oak-floored dining area, a log fire, and locally sourced produce used where possible in its open farmhouse kitchen. Free wifi is available throughout. Please note that the site doesn't have shower or toilet facilities.

Local attractions

The boat trips, nature spotting, ambling and pedalling of the Norfolk Broads can all be accessed a mile from White Lion Campsite from its local river the Waveney, flowing between the border of Norfolk and Suffolk for most of its Broads-based meander. The pub's local town is Beccles, a small market town on the Waveney where boats can be hired at the lido for hours or afternoons out. If you prefer your water of the salty variety, the Suffolk coast is close to base too: the beach at Dunwich is about 20 minutes away, and both Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth are under ten miles. Southwold, home of those beach huts and that pier, is about half an hour away. Kids should be pleased with trips to Pleasurewood Hills near Lowestoft or to Africa Alive! At Kessingland, two of the many family-friendly attractions in the area.
