  • Cosy warm glamping in Suffolk woodland
  • Five miles from Bury St Edmunds
  • Pods with decking, barbecue area, wetroom, double bed and TV
‘Luxury glamping in the heart of Suffolk’ is how the West Stow Pods peeps describe their pads, which sounds just stonking for those who like to combine comfy stays with scenic nature. The roomy pods are set deep in the wildlife haven-heavy Suffolk woodland a mere five miles from Bury St Edmunds, with walking and cycle paths snaking all around the surrounding scenery, and with an array of other activities in the area from canoeing to tennis to fishing (Larkwood Trout Fishery is just down the road). Each mega pod has outdoor decking and a barbecue area – from which you can supervise the making of dinner while sipping a glass of wine – and indoors, a double bed, sofa bed, wetroom with toilet and shower, kitchenette with fridge, toaster, microwave and tea-making facilities. For curling up after a long day’s walking and barbecue supervising, the pods also have a flatscreen Freeview telly with DVD player. Heating and lighting are included in the rate and there are electrical points handy for charging all your gadgets (staying in the outdoors should not have to mean leaving behind one’s hairdryer). The pods are designed to be comfy and secure in all weather: sheep wool insulation keeps them warm in winter, a foil layer cools things down in summer, and the double-glazed (and lockable) French doors reduce condensation and, along with the specially designed roofing material, cut down any noise from heavy rain.

Wulfrun MegaPod cabin

Liked: The setting and scenery was lovely. Staying in the middle of a quiet and peaceful woodlands with plenty to do, see and explore right on the doorstep. The pitches are well laid out to give space and privacy.

Disliked: The pod was poorly equipped for a family stay. When paying luxury prices I would have expected a few more basics to have been provided. The kitchenette didn't have enough plates for the four of us (and we're dirty when we arrived) and cutlery was a basic plastic spoon/fork/knife. The knife not sharp enough for even cutting bread or cheese. It perhaps needs to be made clearer when booking that the kitchen area does not come with any utensils. Had we been camping I would have bought all these things with me but when paying "glamping" prices I would expect basics such as a sharp knife, bottle opener and BBQ tools to have been provided. Or even just enough plates for the number of people booked!

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: It was remote, quiet, clean and a new experience

Disliked: No phone signal or WiFi but we adapted quickly and it was good to have a digital detox

From the manager: Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. Glad you adapted to the lack of Wifi and phone signal, although this depends upon your provider. Most people are able to access phone signal and wifi from the car park, at least. All the best, Ed

Local attractions

Walks, walks and more walks stretch off in every direction in this part of Suffolk, from the half-mile stroll to West Stow to the pine and oak-filled wanders on the north of the Lark Valley. Mildenhall, Little Saxham and Ickworth are among many mapped walks from two to ten miles in the countryside around Bury St Edmunds, and Suffolk County Council has also compiled 18 ‘easy access’ walks suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs (all start at a car park and most have facilities along the routes). Cyclists have several signed bike routes to pick from for both leisure and long-distance, and there are route maps around Bury St Edmunds, Beccles, Ipswich and Lowestoft as well as rides around the King’s Forest and Newmarket. More into mountain biking? Head out of Bury towards Thetford or Brandon Country Park for the best trails. This is also Anglo-Saxon land: West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village is close by, a recreation of an Anglo-Saxon village on the site of the real one discovered and excavated from the late 1950s; even reluctant youngsters should have a hoot exploring here, especially as they can dress up in period costume. Spend anything from a couple of hours to a day around the village: the site edges the West Stow Country Park, with woodland, country trails, bird hides and an adventure playground. Kings Forest is also a popular local option for families craving the great outdoors (look out for the fallow deer). If the kids have a history buzz on after the Anglo-Saxon Village, the excellent Moyse’s Hall Museum tells the tale of Suffolk through the ages, including a section on witchcraft for the more ghoulishly minded offspring. The ticket price can be combined with the Anglo-Saxon Village as a Heritage Ticket discount. If not, Suffolk yields a good hoard for picky travellers all within a half-hour drive: the rare breeds farm and maze at Kentwell Hall and Gardens; play centres and kart circuits, Go Ape! – including for juniors – in nearby Thetford Forest, and getting eagle-eyed at the inhabitants of bird of prey sanctuary and hospital The Raptor Foundation at Woodhurst.
