  • A 15-minute drive to Southwold, and half an hour from Sutton Hoo
  • Fresh eggs available; pubs a five-minute drive and shops 10 minutes
Fancy some downtime exploring rural Suffolk? The tree-shaded pitches at Hill Farm are in a peaceful setting near the historic town of Saxmundham, handily accessible from the A12 and close to Suffolk’s popular coastline. This is a site that welcomes families and groups of friends – and it's wonderfully dog-friendly too (there’s a five-acre woodland to the north of the site that's great for dog walking). The site has good TV reception for relaxing indoors on damp or chilly days. Campfires are allowed too, so you can keep warm and toasty while grilling up a barbecue feast, and you can add fresh farm eggs to the breakfast menu when they're available to buy. The popular village of Westleton (10 minutes’ drive) has village stores, a farm shop, a garage and an art gallery; and if you fancy a change from cooking, there are also a couple of pubs and tearoom, with more dining options in Darsham (five minutes). Back on site, there’s a toilet block with hot running water, plus simple facilities including a shower and washing machine, grey waste and chemical toilet disposal and recycling.

Non-electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: My partner & I wanted a long weekend break after a stressful few weeks at work. Jaik has done amazingly well in maintaining a 'back to basics' campsite with a real rural feel - so so relaxing and made it really easy to unwind. Jaik himself is a great host, always easy to reach by text message & actually left us out a firepit for us to have a campfire after I asked. Really generous and responsive person. Our pitch was earth & grass, non-electric, perfect for our 3-person tent with lots of room to spare for our car and campfire. We also had a wooden worktop which was really handy when we were preparing food. We were also not far away from the toilet block, with lovely running hot water and a nice shower. There was also a washing up block stocked with cleaning products and sponges. We had everything we needed. Great location on a quiet farm, we met some other really friendly guests too. Well-situated to National Trust sites (we visited Dunwich Heath and Sutton Hoo) as well as the coast, Saxmundham, and a lovely farm shop. We had an amazing stay and can't fault anything. 100% would return!

Electric hardstanding pitch

Liked: Table and chairs by the pitch. 20 pence pieces left in case you didn't have change for the shower.

Disliked: Shower and toilet facilities a little basic. No hot water to do washing up.

Electric hardstanding pitch

Liked: Lovely campsite and a kind, helpful owner! Jaik was friendly and welcoming and helped when we had a minor first aid incident! We liked it here so much we added an extra day to our stay. It’s peaceful and the back pitches (we were in pitch 11) are very spacious, private, and nestled in the trees. Saw two pheasants on my way to take out the recycling:)

Electric hardstanding pitch

Liked: Owner was very helpful. Lovely little site. Toilets dated but clean & seen worse. We went very early March (hardstanding) after a very wet winter & storm after storm. Walked through the site which was terribly muddy & most not really in use after so many storms but it looked like it would be lovely in amongst the trees once the ground dries up. We would definitely be happy to return. Ideally placed if visiting the Suffolk coast.

Local attractions

Hills Farm is an great base for exploring the Suffolk coastline, with indie boutiques in cobbled streets and restaurants on the pier in the cute seaside town of Southwold (15 minutes’ drive), and an extensive sandy beach backed by dunes at Walberswick (10 minutes). Aldeburgh (20 minutes) is home to famous literary and music festivals, plus bracing strolls on the pebble beach and a renowned fish and chip shop. There’s plenty of history in these parts too, with stately part-medieval Orford Castle (25 minutes) open for tours of its angular keep, and you can follow a spectacular walk around the walls at Framlingham Castle (20 minutes). The star of the show here, however, might just be the Anglo-Saxon burial ground and museum showcasing its priceless, golden finds at Sutton Hoo (half an hour). Getting out and about in glorious and unspoilt countryside is easy too, with boardwalks crossing the heathland at National Trust-owned Dunwich Heath and Beach (15 minutes). At the famous RSPB Minsmere coastal reserve (20 minutes), you have the chance to spot otters in reedbed pools, with rare bitterns and avocets nesting nearby.
