  • Working farm with llamas and cattle, 15 minutes from Sudbury
  • Wild camping among spectacular scenery
  • Five minutes' walk from a nature reserve
If you go down to the woods today… you might just stumble upon Little Ropers Woodland Camping, a peaceful back-to-basics site on two acres of Suffolk woodland, 15 minutes’ drive from Sudbury. If you’re after a whole heap of fancy facilities you’ll need to search elsewhere, for this is proper wild camping; a place where tiddlers can gleefully build dens in the woods or swing from the trees, and you can breathe deep lungfuls of fresh air while hanging out with the working farm’s cows and llamas or watching the local badgers scrabble in the undergrowth. Traditional camping doesn’t involve gadgets and phones, of course, so there’s no electricity on site, but there are a few facilities to make life a little more comfy: a flush toilet, undercover washing-up area, an outside tap and lots of handy local maps and info. Cars must be left at the farmyard to help the site retain its quiet rural vibe; wheelbarrows are available to help cart your gubbins down to your pitch. Barbecues and campfires are, of course, practically an essential part of the experience (although please note that in tinder-dry periods fires cannot be allowed for safety reasons). Bundles of firewood can be bought on site, and foodie supplies picked up at the farm shop five minutes’ drive away or the supermarkets in Sudbury.

Route directions

From the A134 from Colchester to Sudbury, take a left-hand turn at Assington and drive through Assington village, heading out on the road towards Bures. After you have passed a thatched cottage on the left (opposite a turning on your right) keep on the same road for a short distance and you will find Little Ropers signpost on your left. The farm is down a track under an oak tree.

Local attractions

After you’ve roamed the woods on site, keep your comfy shoes on and head out to explore a bit more widely – the site’s well placed for walks through the Stour Valley. A local fave is through the Tiger Hill Local Nature Reserve, five minutes’ stroll away, where a footpath follows the Assington Brook through the woods and water meadows. Still got some walking left in your boots? Try Arger Fen Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive), or head to Bures (10 minutes) to see a huge hill carving of the dragon that terrified the villagers back in the Middle Ages. If your feet need a little respite, get your arms going instead on a canoe or kayak trip from Sudbury (15 minutes). Stick around in Sudbury to stroll around artist Thomas Gainsborough’s house; for more historic bits and bobs, head to Hedingham Castle (25 minutes’ drive) or truffle out bargains at the Halstead Antiques Centre (25 minutes). Need a glass of wine after all this activity? Dedham Vale Vineyard is 20 minutes away for tours and tastings.
