  • Back-to-basics site behind a country pub three miles from Lavenham
  • Canoeing, falconry and National Trust estates within a half-hour drive
  • Daily changing menu of seasonal local dishes in the pub
Sometimes, it has to be said, all one needs for contentedness is a couple of life’s simple pleasures. A well-pulled pint, a large meal and a quiet place to rest one’s head – job done. Thank you and good night. And that’s what you’ll get at the Six Bells, a splendid little rural pub three miles from Lavenham. There are no bells and whistles in the field here (well, apart from the bells on the pub sign, that is), just traditional country camping that’s handily located a mere stagger from a purveyor of fine foods and ales. Fine indeed is the food on the pub’s menu, an offering that changes daily to reflect what’s in season round these parts. Pub classics like burgers or fish and chips are always on offer (with hand-cut chips, naturally); for something a bit fancier, try the famed Blythburgh pork, or some fish that’s been whisked to you from the North Sea coast. Once you’ve had your fill, the characterful Grade II-listed pub has plenty of cosy spots for a tipple or two, including some coveted seats by the fire. (If you’re really embracing the whole country-camping vibe, you’re welcome to light up a barbecue or a campfire back at your pitch instead.) Pitches are in a large grass field behind the pub, with plenty of space to spread all your kit out. Bring a torch – it’s pretty dark out here by night. You’ll have access to the pub’s toilets and free wifi service, and, with any luck, a view of the stars coming out across the dark sky as you drift off to sleep. Simple pleasures indeed...

Local attractions

There are plenty of walks you can do around here, including circular walks to the surrounding villages, or the hour or so to Lavenham, where you can visit the Guildhall and Little Hall museums and wander through the streets of half-timbered houses. One of the area’s most impressive houses is Kentwell Hall, 20 minutes’ drive from the site: the 500-year-old house is still a family home, so you’ll see an eclectic mix of Tudor restoration and 21st-century living. There’s also a rare breed farm here and some gorgeous gardens with a maze, some topiary, film props and hidden animal sculptures. A couple of miles down the road from here is the National Trust-owned Melford Hall, where you can see inside the house and wander on the woodland trail through the grounds. Look out for drawings and sketches around the house by Beatrix Potter, who stayed here many times. If staying at a pub has inspired an interest in beer, you can find out a bit more about the production process on a tour of the Greene King brewery in Bury St Edmunds, 25 minutes away.
