  • Peaceful adults-only site with a no-music/TV rule; dogs allowed
  • A 15-minute drive from Framlingham and 20 minutes from Aldeburgh
  • Firepits, kitchen and undercover seating available for guests
No one could blame you for wanting a break from the kids, whether they’re your own or just the neighbourhood ones getting underfoot… If that calming escape is calling then make your way to Brick Kiln Campsite, an adults-only site less than five minutes’ drive from the small Suffolk village of Campsea Ashe. In a rural spot, there’s little around this quiet spot but fields. The site’s not set up for electric – though plugs for charging phones can be accessed if going without is a problem – so the outside world may struggle to intrude, and a no-music rule (other than birdsong, of course) should ensure that reading hours and slumbers go undisturbed. Eats are easily sorted without leaving this placid paradise: firepits are available, and there's a communal barbecue where you can cook up more traditional meals (disposable barbecues are also for sale here). Damper hours can be spent in the converted stable, with its shared kitchen and small honesty shop, and when cooking is to be avoided altogether it’s a 10-minute walk across fields to the nearest pub serving food. There's also a reading room with a book exchange and games to keep you entertained. For forays off site, it’s less than 10 minutes' drive to Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – where wildlife spotting, leisurely wanders and seaside strolls are all to be had – and five minutes to the nearest golf course for those who find peace on the tees.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Fantastic campsite, easy no nonsense system to find a pitch. Facilities well looked after and clean. There is an honesty shop, we just bacs transferred what we purchased. Nice and quiet being an adults only site. No electric points, but we are self sufficient so not a problem. A nice Pub just a short walk away. Great for a relaxing break away 👍

Disliked: Nothing, other than the price, like a lot of sites in this area, the price has hiked way too much in the last couple of year's. Tolerable for one night, but puts you off staying any longer.

From the manager: Dear Colin - Thank you for your kind review - I am very grateful to you. Bless you. You are always welcome to return. Whilst you haven't reduced your overall score due to your thoughts on the price, and I do appreciate this, I feel I must comment on this as it is not the first time that it has been commented on. Firstly, I do keep a check on prices in the local area and yes, some are cheaper than mine; but these sites don't offer all that I offer and they are often family sites. Most of us are around the £30 per night mark. Family sites means that there is always a guaranteed level of campers staying on site whilst adult only sites reduces this guarantee considerably and therefore often my site can consist of a handful of campers. But campers come here because they like the quietness of the site and I plan to keep it like this. Just because on occasions I only have a few campers here, I don't suddenly reduce the facilities or the cleaning to reflect this; there will still be access to everything and showers can be taken throughout the day and night - the system runs constantly, like all the gadgets in the kitchen, including the fridges. I believe that some people may look around and think All this money just to stay in a field! But there are many 'background' costs that you don't see. There is the insurance and memberships, websites and booking systems, commission taken from each booking (I don't see that £30!!) there are bank charges, bookkeeper and accountant and staff costs, the daily running costs, the electricity of the social area and running of the shower unit and hot water ALL day/night long. There are cleaning costs. I have to maintain the site to ensure that the buildings are in good order and there are costs in maintaining the grounds. I recently had the pergola built to keep my campers dry in the rain and then sides put onto this (in total, this has cost me close to £10,000),and I am always looking at ways to invest for ongoing improvements and new projects to enhance campers experience. I had the showers re-done last year, (£16,000) When my accountant sends back my figures every year I always query where have I spent all that money! And I do spend hours going through the income and outgoings, and I can always see what it has been spent and vow to cut back another year; but I don't because I want to keep up the standards and facilities here. But times are hard for us all and general living costs have risen as we all know. Even going out for a coffee and sandwich can cost around £7-10 so I think perhaps £15 per head per night to stay in a lovely quiet location is perhaps in line with daily living costs. I am not sure where else you would stay for that amount of money - not even a youth hostel! Like all other campsites, I cannot guarantee a regular income. I am shut for 6 months of the year; if the weather is bad - like it was this year - income drops - if it is hot - income can also drop as camping is weather dependent so income is never guaranteed but I continue to guarantee the high level of services offered here. The prices will not be increasing again next year and discounts are in place if you plan to stay 7+ nights. Thank you again for your review. I really appreciate this. T.

Definitely we will be staying here again when visiting friends.

Liked: Well kept site. Friendly and attentive owners without being intrusive. Level grass pitches which are well marked out. Fire pit is a bonus. High standard of decor and cleanliness in the showers and toilets. Lots of hot water. Love the honesty shop and the kitchen amenities. Use of the fridge to keep our cider cool was great. Hope to see you again soon.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: A really lovely stay - one of my favourite campsites. Beautiful big, flat pitches with fire pits. The toilets and showers were immaculate and a real credit to Tina who cleans them regularly. Absolutely loved the Honesty Shop - so many thoughtful items in there. It was also really good to be able to use the fridge/freezer and microwave in the kitchen and I appreciated being able to borrow items. The whole campsite just had a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and I would definitely return. Tip - the pitches along the longest edge of the field get the evening sun!

Disliked: Not so keen on the push button showers and not being able to vary the temperature but this was very minor.

Local attractions

Explores of this area are a cinch for pedallers: a trip to nearby Rendlesham (a 10-minute drive) should sort wheels, and the rental place even delivers to site. Once a ride is secured, head along to Rendlesham Forest, a 15-minute drive or 25-minute cycle away, to zip along bike paths through the 1,500-hectare woodland. There’s plenty of history hereabouts to dive into too. The site’s 15 minutes from Framlingham Castle and the Anglo-Saxon king’s ship burial ground at Sutton Hoo, 35 minutes from the stunning famed Victorian pier in Southwold, and 45 minutes from Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum. Even closer at hand, it’s less than five minutes to Marlesford Mills Antiques Centre, if bargain hunting's your bag. On warmer days, make tracks for the seaside. The nearest shingle beach is at Aldeburgh, and it’s 35 minutes to the sandy, pebbled stretch at Southwold (stick around here for brewery and distillery tours, and an excellent pier). For a proper sandy beach though, Lowestoft is a must – it’s 50 minutes from base by car, or an hour on the train from the station five minutes’ drive from the site. Those seeking days among museums, shops, galleries and restaurants should take those tracks in the direction of Ipswich instead, half an hour’s train journey or car ride away.
