  • Family park close to the Durham coastline, with sea and beach views
  • Smart facilities including a pool, sports court and bar-restaurant
  • A 25-minute drive from Durham and 40 from Newcastle city centre
A pebble’s propulsion from golden sand dunes, with a perfect view of the blue-green ocean as far as the eye can see… Crimdon Dene Holiday Park is an excellent spot for discovering the splendour of the little-known stretch of coastline known as the Durham Heritage Coast. Getting out onto the nearest stretch of sand is a cinch from here, as Crimdon beach is a short walk away; the site's also well placed for mini safaris in the local nature reserves, strolls on the coast path and games of golf with cracking clifftop views. Certain guests may decree the North Sea to be just a tad too chilly for a full-on swim; those folk will be pleased to hear that there's warmer water at the indoor pool back at the park, and even warmer still in the Jacuzzi next to it. An outdoor sports court and playground are on hand for those who require a bit of space to run about, and an amusement arcade for those who'd like to invest their pocket money in games of skill, luck and concentration. Fuel all this activity with meals and drinks at the spacious bar-restaurant or hot drinks from the coffee bar. As a family park, Crimdon Dene has a good range of daytime activities, kids' clubs and so forth, and in high season, there’s also plenty of evening action in the form of live music and shows (at other times, you’ll find a more toned-down entertainment schedule).

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The proximity of facilities Sea view in distance Ease of checking in. Toilet and shower facilities. On-site pool

Disliked: - Noise - the neighbours on the site didn’t feel like respectful campers and were chatting and shouting throughout the night. - Toilet facilities after a particularly dreadful camper used it - I felt for the cleaner who had to sort it out! - Sloping pitch. It’s much easier to camp when chocks aren’t needed. - Parkdene entertainment. I’ve been to a few Parkdene where the entertainers have been much more engaging. The audience hadn’t a clue what was going on half the time!

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Good location fordestination in Northumberland if travelling by car.

Disliked: Before you book, check which way your motorhome / caravan will be facing as there are arrows on the pitches telling you which way to face. We were facing a static caravan, whereas others had beautiful views of the sea. We were very disappointed with the shower blocks as they need updating. The key coded locks to the toilets/shower blocks were broken and, being a female, I felt very vulnerable taking a shower, as anyone could have walked in. So I showered in our caravan. Also, while we were there, youngsters used the ladies toilets as a meeting room to eat, drink and watch videos on their phones. With regard to the male showers, they were very small (30 inches wide / see pictures 3 tiles wide), not very deep and a minimal barrier between the shower area and where you put your clothes. And so, see the pictures, my husband’s clothes and shoes got wet each time he had a shower. Presumably, the same applies to the female showers. Finally, at the entrance there is a sale sign saying there is direct access to the beach, yet on arrival, we asked how we get down to the beach and we were told that you have go out to the main road, turn left and follow the signs !

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The facilities are excellent in the sense that there is so much to do for young children. The indoor pool is included in the pitch fee, you just need to book a slot as numbers are limited as to how many can enter the pool at one time. The slots are 45 minutes long. We didn't eat in the restaurant, but the food looked quite good. Prices aren't cheap, but not too expensive. The entertainment in the main hall was really good, for all ages, and the bingo seemed to be very popular for the adults. The arcade area is small and your money will disappear quickly if you let it. Showering facilities - spot on. I counted 3 parks for the kids and the beach is great, with a lovely little community cafe where dogs are allowed. The staff throughout my visit were very kind and helpful.

Disliked: Food prices are too high. Short time slots in the pool. Lifeguards were not very helpful at poolside (would not allow my 7 year old little boy to use one of their flotation supports).

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Staff very friendly, lovely location very close to a fantastic beach. Close to entertainment and bar and not too noisey on an evening, but was late September.

Disliked: Pitches are very close together. Toilet and shower facilities clean, however the shower drainage is very poor, had to rescue my shoes from floating under the shower cubicle door mid shower. Very expensive in the bar (£5.29 pint of bitter)

Local attractions

Ramble or ride along the coastal path to get the best views of the ruggedly dramatic Durham Heritage Coast, or head inland to explore ancient woodlands such as Castle Eden Dene (15 minutes' drive), a 550-acre nature reserve with more than 450 types of flora and 12 miles of footpaths. In nearby Hartlepool (10 minutes), guests can tour HMS Trincomalee, the oldest warship still afloat in the UK, along with lots of other interesting stuff at the Maritime Experience on the historic quayside. Other popular attractions include the Tweddle Children’s Animal Farm, a 15-minute walk away (perhaps a little longer if you're marshalling small people), or the fascinating living history museum at Beamish (40 minutes' drive), where kids can don hard hats for trips down the mine, ride an old tramway and get stuck into lots of dressing up and activities. It’s also well worth a trip to Durham (25 minutes), where you can stroll along the river banks for stunning views of the ancient cathedral and castle; or to Newcastle (40 minutes), which is crammed with culture and commerce.
