  • Small family-run farm park 10 minutes' drive from Beverley
  • A 15-minute walk from local pub and shop; bus stops nearby
  • Well-stocked three-acre fishing lake on site
Farm animals, fishing and fresh air… and yet just a few minutes from handy urban amenities: Barmston Farm Holiday Park certainly hits that sweet spot on the setting front. Trot along to this friendly family-run site in the village of Woodmansey and you’ll be sharing with quite the East Yorkshire menagerie, as pygmy goats, donkeys, a pig, black swans, chickens and ducks all reside at this peaceful and well-maintained park. And they’re not the only ones: anglers can cast off at the three-acre fishing lake to scoop out carp, bream, tench, rudd, roach and perch. (The thoughtful folks on site have set up a restocking programme to make sure there’s always plenty of critters in these waters.) A rural break this may be, but it’s certainly not an isolated one: the village shop and (most importantly) pub are a mere 15-minute stroll away, and it’ll only take you 10 minutes or so to drive to Beverley for supermarkets, leisure facilities and nights on the town. If driving doesn’t feature on your holiday wishlist, flag down a bus from the stop a few minutes away to be transported to Beverley or beyond (Hull, Hornsea and beachy Bridlington are all options).

Woodmansey 3 bedroom static caravan

Liked: Excellent setting, the static was clean and well equipped, the grounds are well kept and secure. The hostess was welcoming and helpful on arrival. Fishing was great with lots of fish caught of a reasonable size. The holiday was a fishing break for me my son and brother and for that could not have been better and we were lucky enough to enjoy good weather during our stay.

Disliked: In contrast to the hostess the host was grumpy and not at all pleasant. Although the static could not be faulted, I would not recommend it for 3 grown men as the bedrooms are tiny but for a family with children it would be fine. I cannot understand why the grounds are so well kept and yet the banks of the lake have not been maintained in years. There is not one platform that is safe to use, they are all rotted and overgrown and constitute a health and safety issue. A portaloo would also be desirable as it is a way back to toilet facilities, not at all friendly to people with mobility issues.

From the manager: Thank you for your review we are glad you were happy with the cleanliness of your caravan and the well keep grounds. I would like to address your dislikes. The caravan has standard size bedrooms for a 3 bedroomed caravan, however the beds in the twin rooms can be pushed together to make small doubles. At the time of your booking, you did have the choice of either the caravan or one of our cottages. You decided on the cheaper option. I did greet you and managed to accommodate your 3-hour unarranged early arrival. I also explained we were in the process of removing the fishing platforms as we no longer require them, and fishing is now from the bank. Quite clearly this did not affect your fishing. We do not have a portaloo as most of our customers prefer to use their own toilets in their accommodation. I also said you could take your car to the lake as you had had a recent keen operation you opted not to do this. My husband doesn't get involved in people's holidays and only spoke to you once only to say if you have two vehicles' one will have to be parked in the main farmyard so puzzled by your comment.

Woodmansey 3 bedroom static caravan

Liked: The fishing at the lake was probably the best weeks fishing I have had and I am 65 so been a few places,we had booked a caravan but was upgraded free of charge, caravan was really good but I am disabled and the steps were to much for me, the lodge was first class and very clean,my wife and sister-in-law had some good days out with plenty to see and do while I was fishing all in all would recommend (especially the fishing) had a good week will book again any one who enjoys the fishing will love this place host's were helpful and friendly, just try it yourself promise you won't be disappointed.

Woodmansey 3 bedroom static caravan

Liked: overall we enjoyed our stay, have to say the fishing was the highlight of my stay! far exceeding my expectations with approx 150lb of bream to 10lb and 15 carp up to 18lb (mostly between 8 and 15lb)this was in 4 hours fishing on the first session!- the day after was a repeat again over 100lb of bream to 10lb and approx 20 carp up to 15 lb the last session didnt produce as much but still had 8 bream to 7lb and 9 carp all low doubles! with 2 good roach near the 2lb mark this was on a waggler set up not carp gear, i upped my hooklength to 8lb bs but i still lost some very big carp im guessing mid to high twenties 2 at the net and 4 or 5 in open water! no one else was fishing during our stay so this may have contributed to the excellent fishing i fished sweetcorn single then changed to double over a groundbait mix for most of the bream and alternated meat and breadflake for a lot of the carp

Disliked: very little! would imagine the summertime would be better etc

Local attractions

Bring bikes or boots to Barmston, as it’s a fab base for rural roaming – a generous 200 acres of common pasture land can be easily wandered from here. Bring buckets and spades along too if you fancy a beachy day or two: the sands of Hornsea and Bridlington are 25 and 40 minutes away by car respectively. Bringing the bairns along on your break? Never need you hear the moan of ‘nowt to do’ around here: they can roam around in the open at activity centre William’s Den (20 minutes’ drive), swing through the trees at the Let Loose! adventure park (five minutes) or come face-to-face with underwater beasties at The Deep aquarium in Hull (20 minutes). An indoor play centre is a few minutes away in Beverley. In summer, stash your binoculars in your bag and scoot off to Spurn National Nature Reserve for a wildlife-spotting boat trip. Another trip not to be missed by fans of a certain boy wizard is a ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering (an hour’s drive) – the station here had a starring role in the first Harry Potter film. Travelling sans small sorts? You may prefer more stately outings to Burton Agnes Hall (35 minutes) and Castle Howard (an hour) or poking about in Beverley’s antique arcade. A wander through Wolds Way Lavender (50 minutes) is a most fragrant idea too.
