Puffins on a private path five minutes from your pitch? Get your beak into the birdwatching – and views – of Wold Farm Campsite on the North Yorkshire coast, at the highest point of the village of Flamborough and the closest campsite for viewing the local puffins, only five or six minutes away from camp. Twitchers flock to Wold Farm for the views as much as the feathers: the bird’s-eye views from here take in the fab coastline, Flamborough Head with its chalk-white cliffs and famous lighthouse, and Danes Dyke, a prehistoric ditch and local nature reserve. Feel a bit possessive when it comes to drinking in scenery like this? Wold Farm has private access to the clifftop available to guests only through the farm paths and meadows. No elbowing others out of the way either when peering at the puffins: there are plenty of viewing areas on the farm’s own cliffs, with the birds and their burrows only metres away. Wold Farm Campsite is on the edge of Flamborough village where there are pubs, takeaways and restaurants to get your nosh on at; Morrissons, Tesco and Iceland are at nearby Bridlington if you want to pack up some picnic to have along with the views at the Wold Farm clifftop picnic area.

Route directions

From Bempton: As you are entering Flamborough there is a sharp bend to the right. Turn left off this bend and follow the dead-end road up the hill for 1 mile, as if you were heading towards the cliff. If you can't see the sea, you can't see us. Entering Flamborough from Bridlington: Go down the hill into Flamborough, past the village pump on your right, and take the first left (signposted Filey). After 3/4 mile, at the end of the village, there is a sharp bend to the left: leave the main road and turn right on the bend and follow the dead-end road for one mile, as if you were heading towards the cliff (not following the arrowed 'camping' sign which is to a different site. Remember - if you can't see the sea, you can't see us!

Local attractions

It’s a short stroll from Wold Farm to the RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs, where there are over 200,000 squawking seabirds (bring earplugs), five clifftop viewing areas, a bird feeding station, a visitor centre and binoculars to hire. The closest viewing area to the visitor centre, Grandstand 200 metres away, is wheelchair and pushchair accessible. Neighbouring Flamborough Head has a bird observatory and one of only two mainland gannetries (that’s a collection of gannets, which until now we did not know) in the UK. The gannets and the puffins can be spotted by boat on RSPB trips around Bempton Cliffs and Flamborough Head from May to July. Wold Farm is a handy base to get your claws into all the other attractions of East Yorkshire too: the Edwardian seaside town of Filey also has a Bird Garden and Animal Park with five acres of land and a bird garden with exotic specimens you won’t see on the Flamborough cliffs. Scarborough, Whitby and Bridlington should also be seen for their sand, museums, historical attractions and the land train at Bridlington, or stay closer to home for the quieter beaches at Reighton Sands, Thornwick Bay, North and South Landings and Danes Dyke, where you can also unearth spongy fossils under the chalky cliffs. If the thought of bathing in the Yorkshire water is making you shudder, Bridlington also has a large leisure centre and pool with slides and water features. Sewerby Hall, Zoo and Gardens is ten minutes’ drive from Wold Farm with an eighteenth century house, more animal spotting, another land train, bowling and pitch and putt. The Elizabethan Burton Agnes Hall is 20 minutes’ drive from the farm and there are several other East and North Yorkshire historical highlights all over including Scarborough Castle, Whitby Abbey and Danby Castle in the North York Moors National Park (speaking of which, head here for a day trip or three to wander the moors and gardens, take a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and potter around the market town of Pickering). We’re assured by the Wold Farm team that many of the pubs in the local area serve top-quality food; other eating opps in East Yorkshire include the delish shellfish at Bridlington, restaurants with rave reviews at Hull, and farmers’ markets and farm shops; if your tastes lean more towards the sugared, take your sweet tooth to design your own delicacies at the John Bull Rock Factory just outside Bridlington.
