  • Among spectacular scenery in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • Within walking distance of West Burton and Thoralby villages
  • Next door to a 17th-century inn serving food and local beers
Now these are views… head here with the camera for scenes right up any holidaymaker's street: Street Head Caravan Park, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, is in an area famous for its scenery and unspoilt countryside, and is surrounded by grazing countryside with Dale views across to the fells beyond. Roll up here to take in the local walks and wildlife – you can walk up and down dales and over moorland from the site – or use Street Head as a base for exploring the wider Yorkshire Dales, the north-east and north-west coasts and the loveliness of the Lake District. This is a place where you could certainly settle for a few days, as there are plenty of handy facilities: the park has a coin-operated laundry, free hot showers, toilets and an indoor washing-up room with a fridge, freezer and tourist information. Street Head Caravan Park is in the valley of Bishopdale and has five pubs and restaurants within a few miles. The nearest, the 17th-century Street Head Inn, is very handily placed next door to the park offices for meals and local brews. A shop and a butcher are at West Burton about a mile and a half away, where there is also a traditional pub serving drinks and snacks all day as well as lunches and dinners. It's also home to the Cauldron Falls (a popular swimming spot in the summer months), a play area and a café.

Liked: Quiet site, nice and clean. Straightforward to find pitch and everything we needed. Lovely pub next door with good food.

Disliked: Toilet paper in ladies bathroom wasn't checked/replaced. Down to one usable Toilet on the last day of our stay. Shower water too hot for small children and not possible to adjust.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch (maximum 7 metres)

Liked: Friendly. Easy access. Clean tidy pitches. Free wifi. Didn't use the showers or toilet block but good easy access to elsan point and water. Nearest shop was Asgarth garage but not far to Leyburn village with loads of parking a good Co-op, chippy and the usual round of pubs. Close to Asgarth Falls which has motorhome access but there is a steep hill. The site has a pub next door which does meals. Definately visit again.

Disliked: Nothing really not to like here if you like walking and a nice quiet stay.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked: Fabulous, immaculately clean facilities. Level pitches. Friendly welcome from Mel. A quick call ahead meant we could arrive early and whilst this might not always be possible it was great to get camp set up and make the most of the day. Pub offering great food and a warm welcome next door. Definitely recommend this peaceful site and we will be back. Thank you!

Local attractions

There are plenty of places within walking distance of Street Head Caravan Park: West Burton has been described as one of the loveliest villages in England and has a well-kept village green leading to the natural waterfall of West Burton Cauldron. The waterfall flows downstream into the River Ure to reach the famous Aysgarth Falls a couple of miles from Street Head and a favourite haunt of writer Wordsworth and painters Turner and Ruskin; the National Parks Information Centre here has guides to local walks, guided walks and activities like climbing and caving. The area around Street Head has miles of signposted footpaths for dale, moor and village-to-village strolls too. For kids, the cathedral city of Ripon at the edge of Wensleydale (about 40 minutes’ drive away) has the Lightwater Valley theme park with a farm, a falconry centre and the UK’s first Angry Birds Activity Park. Newby Hall Adventure Garden, also at Ripon, has an interactive water area, playgrounds, pedalos and a miniature railway. Or take the family to be bamboozled at the pyramid, passages and tunnels of Forbidden Corner at Coverdale (20 minutes), a former folly probably best described as ‘delightfully bonkers’.
