Westholme Estate sit on their very own stretch of riverbank overlooking the undulating green hills and happy valleys of the Yorkshire Dales. The site, which recently enjoyed an £8 million facelift, is a pretty deluxe affair: within landscaped woodland glades, and there are top notch facilities on site. The estate is a fisherman’s fantasy, enjoying fishing rights on its own section of Bishopdale Beck, so there should be plenty of opportunity to go home with some tall tales. The genteel estate restaurant serves up an excellent selection of nosh at lunch and dinnertime, and there’s also a comfy bar and lounge where you can relax with a coffee (or something a bit stronger). Perfectly-behaved pooches are permitted on site, but must of course be kept on their diamante leads.

Local attractions

It goes without saying that there are also loads of hiking opportunities: the Yorkshire Dales National Park is renowned among ramblers, and those seeking the Holy Trail flock here every year to walk the Pennine Way. Visitors who are looking for a more leisurely stroll can take a ten minute walk to the cascading Aysgarth Falls, or pootle down to the chocolate box village of West Burton to stock up on provisions and sample the local Black Sheep Ale or a genuine Yorkshire pud. If you can drag yourself away from the perfect peace of the estate, there is plenty to see a bit further afield, including many great heritage sites: a short drive will take you to the beautiful and tranquil ruins of Fountains Abbey, or to imposing Bolton Castle, built in 1399 by Richard le Scrope. Cheese aficionados can make a pilgrimage to the Wensleydale Creameries to get their hands on some of Wallace and Gromit’s favourite Wensleydale cheese. Classic Yorkshire market towns like Grassington and Hawes are not far away, and each has its own National Park Centre where you can find out more about the area and buy local crafts and souvenirs.
