  • Between the historic market towns of Thirsk and Northallerton
  • Around 15 minutes’ drive to the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors
  • Close to good village pubs and restaurants
Seeking a patch of serenity? And might you want to spend your days sightseeing too? Pitch up at this compact, highly tidy and friendly little site between the historic market towns of Thirsk and Northallerton, for peaceful stays and proximity to piles of Yorkshire’s most topping attractions are what’s in store for holidaymakers who plonk themselves here. Chestnuts park is handily set in the Vale of York, right in between the North Yorkshire market towns of Northallerton and Thirsk. It’s a short drive to the A1M and the A19, making your access most effortless to tiptop Yorkshire attractions like the spa baths and tearooms of highly pretty Harrogate, Vikingly York and its Minster Cathedral, plus heaps of handsome country pads and heritage spots like Ripley Castle, Newby Hall and the famed Fountain’s Abbey within Studley Royal Park. On site, no entertainment means distractions are kept to a bare minimum, leaving you to get on with the all-important task of getting thoroughly relaxed. There’s plenty within easy reach around Northallerton though, so should at any point your feet feel itchy, good pubs and restaurants are all a short amble away. Newly opened in 2016, this family-run holiday park gives guests larger-than-average pitches to stretch out among, all with electric hookups and their own water tap too… And if you’re travelling with a rally, there’s also a designated field here for you and yours. And while this site might be stripped down, its amenities aren’t: at all guests’ disposal are luxury heated showers and a toilet block with an accessible wetroom – also splendidly for those with reduced mobility, the rest of the site has been adapted to incorporate ramp access and wheelchair-friendly doors. Also on site is a chemical disposal point and a water disposal point.

Local attractions

Yorkshire is filled to the gills with heritage spots galore, at castles, country houses, stately homes and abbeys: Ripley Castle, Castle Howard, Helmsley Castle, Richmond Castle and Newby Hall and are just a few of the posh country piles you can poke around locally, and the Abbey of Byland and Studley Royal Park (with the ruins of Fountains Abbey within) are within easy reach too. You can reach the edge of the North York Moors National Park in about 15 minutes by car, or the Yorkshire Dales National Park in just over half an hour, so Chestnuts Caravan Park is splendid to use a base for exploring both. The site also lies between Northallerton and Thirsk, both around 10 minutes’ drive away: Northallerton’s busy twice-weekly markets and tiptop array of high-end boutiques make it a topping spot for shoppers, while Thirsk’s cobbled market square, contemporary art gallery and James Herriot museum attract culture vultures from all over. Further afield, visit Ripon to see its fine cathedral and historic architecture, or York and its iconic 2,000-year-old cathedral, Jorvik Viking Centre and National Railway Museum. Also within easy reach is the highly handsome spa town of Harrogate, packed with yet more photogenic old architecture and its famed spa baths and Betty’s tearoom.
