  • Peaceful back-to-basics site opposite a pub in a quiet hamlet
  • Close to several walking routes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • 400 year old food pub opposite the site
Pizza, dales and cask ale... what a winning combo. Get stuck into the lot from peaceful and rural Bridge House Campsite in the Yorkshire Dales National Park: this lovely little place has its own pizzeria and is a few minutes' potter from the local pub and a fine menu of fine cask ales (and pub grub too, should you crave yet more after your pizza). You may then care to burn some of that off. Sorted, as the site is in a popular place for Yorkshire Dales hikes, with several trails (including the Dales Way) accessible from local village Starbotton, and enough more nearby to burn off even a daily pizza and cask ale habit... Around the region, Skipton is half an hour's drive south and Harrogate within an hour to the north east. The Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is 45 minutes away. But back to that pizza. Bridge House is set around a 19th-century farmhouse, owned by generations of the same family since 1883; the most recent lot have – how sensible – turned the house's dining room has been turned into a pizzeria where pizzas, desserts and soft drinks are available to have in or take away on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. And the pub? It's the Fox and Hounds, a 400 year old inn conveniently set almost opposite the site. Pitches at Bridge House are on grass and for tents, and amenities include a water tap, a flushing toilet and a portable shower in a shaded corner next to the camping field. The site is behind the pizzeria: look for the Cecilia's Pizzeria sign.

Lodge (adults only)

Liked: This is an amazing find. Stayed in the old brick lodge. Loads of character, comfy double bed, tea/coffee making facilities, fridge, wood burner, and excellent clean ensuite. And you have to try one of Cecilias pizzas. Honestly one of the best Ive had, and Ive had some good ones in Italy. Lovely pub 50 metres up the road. As a professional house / pet sitter I get the opportunity to stay in a lot of campsites / airbnb etc places in between assignments, and for the price this is one of the best Ive ever stayed in. Cecilia, I will be back for a delicious pizza if Im ever in the area and need a place to stay again.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Small quiet campsite with good clean facilities and great views. Slept so well, all you could hear was the babbling brook and the bleating of sheep, a true break from the sounds of a city.

Lodge (adults only)

Liked: The whole cottage was very cosy. There was a kettle, fridge, cups, plates and bowls, cutlery and a toaster. Shower was extremely hot and powerful. Setting was lovely and so was the host. Free bundle of wood for log burner and more to purchase if needed. Pizzas from Cecelia exceptional.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This was our second time camping at Bridge House. Since our first visit, they've added a nice new toilet/shower building and outdoor sink for washing up. There is also now a small refrigerator to share with other campers, which was useful. We got pizzas from Cecilia's Pizzeria on our first night (very tasty!). The best things about the campsite, in our opinion, are that it is small and quiet, with only six pitches, and that it has some really lovely views and great walks that can be started right from the site.

Disliked: Bring bug spray - the site is alongside a stream and close to the River Wharfe, so it can get a bit buggy in the evenings. The upside to this is that you will likely see swifts and swallows swooping around, hoovering up flying insects!

Local attractions

Local village Starbotton is a popular startoff point for Yorkshire Dales and Wharfdale hikes, as it's near the Dales Way, running for 80 miles from Ilkley in West Yorkshire to Bowness-on-Windermere in Cumbria. Energetic types could also tackle Buckden Pike (10 minutes' drive), a heady fell hike leading to the top of Wharfedale; the only higher peak in the area is Great Whernside (15 minutes), a paltry two metres taller. There's loads more to see and do in the area by car, such as Kilnsey Park, (15 minutes), a farm park with fishing and kids' activities), or a look at the history and industry of the area at the Dales Countryside Museum (35 minutes) or grand old Bolton Abbey, 40 minutes away. If you're craving yet more Yorkshire cuisine, cheesy treats at Wensleydale Creamery are within 35 minutes' drive. Further afield, have a peaceful ride on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, the spectacular 73-mile journey from Settle (50 minutes) to Carlisle via the Yorkshire Dales,  the North Pennines and the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct; this one is a bit of a must.
