  • Rural dog-friendly site on the Duke of Devonshire’s estate
  • In the Yorkshire Dales, a short walk from Simon's Seat and the river
  • Alpacas on site and within walking distance of two pubs and a café
Oh, to be in the rural Yorkshire Dales, sipping on a brew surrounded by Howgill Lodge’s three resident alpacas on the Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey Estate. Built into the hillside, the terraces are separated by dry stone walls and all spots have simply stunning views of green slopes. This may be a spectacularly rural spot, but there’s no shortage of stuff to get up to locally, whether you're watching the friendly resident alpacas tuck into their breakfast, taking a wild dip in the river Wharfe 10 minutes’ walk from the site or tracking down a pint of something in one of two traditional Yorkshire pubs half an hour’s walk away (one of these serves real ales and good food, and has a lush beer garden, by the way…) Jo and Rich, the friendly staff at this dog-friendly site, have heaps of local knowledge. Let them dish out the goss on the area's walks, cycle routes and attractions as well as the top local places for food and drink (such as the café five minutes’ walk away for a choc brownie and milkshakes). You'll need all the calories if you're setting forth for Yorkshire Dales walks like Simon's Seat… It really doesn’t matter whether you’re after an action-packed getaway with the kids or a quiet wildlife retreat with loved ones and your canine companion – both are easily achievable here. And either way, modern, high-quality facilities on site include hot showers, laundry facilities and washing-up sinks.

Liked: This is our 3rd time at Howgill, it’s still our favourite campsite! Spotlessly clean, stunning views, brilliant location, modern facilities and lovely and quiet. We now have our favourite pitch and Howgill have always accommodated any requests we have about where we would like to be pitched.

Liked: Couldn’t fault this site at all. The facilities were spot on…clean and accessible. The views were out of this world. There are several walks directly from the site, which was great to explore the local area. What more could you ask for? We will definitely be back!!

Electric gravel motorhome pitch (medium)

Liked: Very well maintained and clean site with several toilet/shower blocks. Has 2 Motorhome service areas. Good location for walking up the River Wharfe to Grassington (6 miles) and several pubs/cafes in villages along the way. There is a nice Love Brownies cafe 50m from the site too.

Disliked: Pitches on the small side so more geared towards VWs than motorhomes (plenty of sliding doors throughout the night). Lots of tent pitches too. Rough road to get to the site from a narrow lane. No phone signal or TV reception but reasonable free Wi-Fi but did drop out frequently at night. Note - many of the local moorside walks do not permit dogs (or cycles).

Electric gravel motorhome pitch (medium)

Liked: Beautiful site. It was out first time here and the surroundings were stunning. Toilets/ was areas were immaculate and at night it had a real campsite feel to it with bbq and fire baskets on the go. Good space between pitches as well. We visited October 23 but will definitely be back in the summer.

Local attractions

If one morning you feel inspired to go strolling, there’s no need to pack up the car. The path to Simon's Seat (half an hour’s walk to the top) is barely a couple minutes' stroll from the site and has simply grand views of the Yorkshire Dales. Carry on rambling into the surrounding moors, where there’s a waterfall dubbed ‘the valley of desolation’. There’s not much desolation around, but there is a gorgeous waterfall and a pool to wade in. A short drive will get you to local villages or towns like Grassington (20 minutes' drive), which has art galleries, a cobbled market square and e-bike hire, and Skipton (20 minutes), which has a castle and heaps of eateries. Another good outing is the Stump Cross Caverns (10 minutes). Discovered by lead miners in the mid 1860s, the cave complex has a cinema and exhibits including prehistoric remains of wolverine and reindeer. The caverns have a hilltop walk, but if you’re still in the mood for more good walks, excellent trails include those around the half-mile-long limestone gorge at Troller's Gill (10 minutes) and Rylstone Cross (25 minutes).
