  • Spectacular views above Robin Hood's Bay
  • Coastline a short walk away through the farm
  • Four miles from Whitby for boat trips and golden sands
Ever been to Robin Hood's Bay? To fish, fossil hunt, birdwatch or potter among its comely cobbled streets? If not, steal some time from work for a North Yorkshire coastline holiday, based above the bay on a farm park with stellar sea views and scenic countryside surrounds. Bay Ness Farm is about 25 minutes' walk from Robin Hood's Bay, across the farm and via an old railway track to the coastline: spectacular views along the way, including of boats in the bay and ships out to sea, come as standard. From the bay, hikers can join the long-distance trail the Cleveland Way on its 110-mile run from Helmsley to the Brigg at Filey, or just mosey around the town's shops, pubs and tearooms among the old streets. Whitby is about four miles to Robin Hood Bay's south. Barbecues are allowed at Bay Ness Farm (land your own fish at Robin Hood's Bay three-mile expanse) and ice pack freezing is available to keep your catch fresh.

Route directions

The farm is located off the B1447, which can be approached from the A171 Scarborough to Whitby road. Please be aware that some satnavs take customers to Greenhills, which is the farm to the south of us on the map. Please follow the directions below to ensure you get to Bay Ness Farm! Satnavs should be set to YO22, High Lane, but they are not very accurate for the last mile. If you are coming from Pickering on the A169 Moors Road do not follow the signs to Little Beck (unless you like an exciting life!) but continue into Whitby. Leave Whitby heading towards Scarborough until you reach the village of Hawsker (around 1.5 miles) and turn left on to the B1447 (signposted to Robin Hood's Bay). From the B1447 (approximately 2 miles from Hawsker village) and just before the church, you will pass 4 terraced cottages. High Lane is the lane of the left, immediately past these cottages. You should turn left and proceed along High Lane, until some farm buildings are reached. Continue following the track as it bears to the left (DO NOT FOLLOW YOUR SATNAV AND TURN RIGHT DOWN THE HILL PAST THE HOUSE, AS THIS ROAD IS NARROW.) Eventually this track becomes a concrete sleeper corrugated track, continue to follow this track as it leads you down to Bay Ness Farm. Please stop before entering the second yard, which has a big stone at its entrance, as space to turn round is limited and it is an uphill reverse to leave the yard. Please attend reception which is located at the end of the second concrete yard (past the big stone) on the right on your arrival and book on for your visit. Reception is located on the right of the main courtyard. Please don't park within 10 metres of the fire points as it blocks the access roads for other users.

Local attractions

To the bay and casting off first: anglers rate the fishing from Robin Hood's Bay's sea wall and its hundreds of marks to be among the most scenic in North Yorkshire: fish here day and night for whoppers of up to 20lb. As well as picking up a section of Cleveland Way, the bay is also the end point for the 192-mile Coast to Coast Walk, so walkers might care to direct themselves towards its starting point in Cumbria with a 19-mile hike to Glaisdale, passing Falling Foss waterfall and Sleights Moor. Feeling faint at the thought? Have an easier ramble from Robin Hood's Bay to Boggle Hole or Maw Wyke. Elsewhere, arm yourself with tourist info from reception to see what's what in the surrounding area and North Yorkshire coast, like the gothic vibe, boat trips, golden sands and lots of leisure and pub opps at Whitby (a lot more sea fishing is available from here too). From Whitby, drive, cycle or take the Coastliner bus to other top spots on the edge of North Yorkshire, like dipping your toes in the sea at Scarborough, the county's seaside capital, or seeing the birds at Bridlington and Bempton Cliffs. Inland, Bay Ness Farm is in the North York Moors National Park, for a spot of steam train riding, adventure sports, or yet more walking among its wide open heather moorland, bluebell woods and tiny villages.
