  • Camping pods on a small site within the North York Moors National Park
  • Secure, lockable and double glazed pods with electricity and lighting
  • In a wildlife haven with spectacular views
Would you like to nest for some time in this North Yorkshire setting near the coast at fangtastic Whitby? You should: Partridge Nest Farm is a friendly and serene little site with spectacular Yorkshire dale scenery, in the grounds of a peaceful private farm in the grand old North York Moors National Park a mile and a half from Grosmont– walkers' paradise and wildlife haven come as standard here too. And there are pods… Swish, clean and warm ones, sleeping up to two adults and three children or up to four adults, and safe, snug and secure with locks and double-glazed windows and doors. They have electricity, lighting and a heater indoors, and a barbecue stand and picnic table outside. Each pod has a sofa bed: please bring airbeds for extra guests, as well as bedding, towels and your usual camping kit. A shower house with free hot showers is close by. Also for guests' use on farm is Bill's Meadow, a one-acre field to kick a ball or run around in, or (top pick), sit dreamily and contemplate Aislebyside and the smashing valley view below (the Grosmont to Whitby steam train puffs gently and frequently along here in season). Visiting critters can be spotted from here too, so look out for deer, pheasant or partridge from your green Yorkshire base. The village of Sleights is a mile away for eats, drinks and supplies at its butchers, bakery and fish and chip shop (all highly rated by the Partridge Nest team) and at the small supermarket open until 10pm. There's also a pub with food and beer garden about 20 minutes' walk from the site.

Camping pod (superior)

Liked: I could not fault this podsite. Ly pod was spotless and warm, I had the superior. The shower facilities are modern and spotless. The site is beautiful, with a chair / table for each pod and an area to make a fire. The location is perfect for Whitby and Grosmont. The road leading here isn't too windy, might be icey in winter. The owner was lovely. I'd definitely stay again.

Camping pod

Liked: pod itself was warm, well lit and spacious. person at reception was lovely and the facilities were well kept, clean and modern

Disliked: pull out bed a bit small for two people, relatively comfortable without having to pay for the mattress topper however, it should probably be included in the price.

Local attractions

Wanders into Sleights village should be first on the list for a lazy day from Partridge Nest Farm, for a poke around its antique shop or a pint in one of its pubs; the village also has a train station and is on the Coastliner and Arriva bus routes. A couple of riverside cafés as well as boating on the River Esk (from April to October) are two and a half miles from Sleights. A mile and a half from the farm is Grosmont, where the North Yorkshire Moors Railway terminates on its way north from Pickering. The railway's old engine shed and the world's oldest passenger railway tunnel (built by railway George Stephenson, trainspotters) are here to have a nosy at, before a trip on the train's 18-mile puff through spectacular moors scenery to Pickering via Goathland. Five miles from the farm is the seaside resort of Whitby, rightly popular around the country (world) for its Dracula association, excellent Whitby Abbey and its connections with Captain Cook, who learned the ropes of his sailing trade in the town. Both the Captain Cook Memorial Museum and the replica of HMS Endeavour are very much worth a look in Whitby for nautical sorts; if your tastes are more Gothic, take the Dracula night walk, or turn up just before Halloween for one of the two annual Whitby Goth Weekends or the yearly International Bram Stoker Film Festival.
