  • Well-maintained site with views over Castle Howard's Great Lake
  • A 30-minute walk to Castle Howard; 15 minutes' drive to Kirkham Abbey
  • Fishing and dog-walking area on site; close to a café and farm shop
Pitching up by a lake's a plus in more ways than one – as well as being an instant de-stresser, waterside surrounds can be a prime spot for fishing and, in the summer, ever-so-soothing boat trips. If you like the sound of that, make your way to Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park for a special stay with a backdrop of one of Yorkshire's (and indeed the UK's) finest country estates. Fancy a stroll close to the water's edge? Go and seek out sweet and savoury goodies at the nearby café and farm shop (a mile away from site) – the latter can rustle up a nifty breakfast or barbecue pack that you can pick up on your arrival. The site's non-watery parts are also pretty splendid – this park has a dedicated dog-walking area where you can admire mature trees while the pups let off a little steam, and it's also got handy practical features like smart loos and showers and a laundry room. Though there's plenty of scope for sticking to the estate during your time here (perhaps looking out for swans and other wildlife), active off-site jaunts around the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty come highly recommended, too – the surrounding area's full of cycle paths, bridleways and hiking trails. Day trips to the city of York and the stunning North Yorkshire coastline can certainly be on the cards here too – and rather handily, guests can also claim discounted entrance to Castle Howard itself.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Site was well spaced out between the hard standing pitches. Showers and toilets are modern and very clean. A very quiet site with no road noise.

Disliked: Grey waste emptying point is unreachable with a campervan or motorhome unless you have a length of hose to run from your dump valve. We use O2 for our mobiles and found it almost impossible to get a signal anywhere on site.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Pitches tidy. Toilets and showers warm, light and clean. Quiet and in a lovely setting. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Dark at night with no bright lights.

Disliked: Fishing lake is more for pike fishing than course so not suitable for our time away. This needs to be added to the description as we were looking for a fishing break. No wifi or phone service.

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback. We're glad to hear you enjoyed our lovely quiet setting. Fishing is an ancillary offering and not designed for the serious fisherman but we do often have guests pull out pike or carp. We look forward to hopefully welcoming you again in future.

Liked: Great location, facilities were lovely and clean. Staff were very helpful. We were on a pitch near the lake which looked over to castle howard, so peaceful for the weekend to chill. Would definitely recommend and looking forward to returning again.

Local attractions

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river. Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars). Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
